Hi Fran
Let me try to contribute as follows:
Post 1
Varley's second wife perhaps wife could have been Hannah/Anne Spencer. His first being Parthenia Hartleywhen they married on 24/11/1823. This does need to be verified. His daughter Pothaniea could be Pothansia who married Samuel Hoyle 0n 16/2/1878. I did not know about the Quinns.
Post 2
John William Whitehead, my ggrandfather worked I believe at a Druggist Wholesalers in Burnley. His son John William later joined the business as did Charles Percy. I dont know the name of the Company.
Post 3
This Varley may be the child of Joseph Whitehead who married Emma Johnson on 11/10/1852, Joseph being the son of Varley senior and Parthenia Hartley.
Post 4
As you say William appears to have got on in the world. I had no knowledge of this sprig!
Post 5
John William Whitehead was born 21/9/1881 in 40 Hufling Lane. He married Hannah Hanks 27/7/1878 in St Andrews Burnley. He was living at Ardwick Place and she at Todmorden Road working as a servant. Her father was Richard Hanks, a farm labourer. My feeling is that the fathers of the couple may have worked together for Richard is later described as a castrator, which is very often the fate of pigs! John william later moved south to Sutton Surrey where he met and married Toonie Myra Millicent Cox on 4/6/1910. He died on 5/4/1921. They had my father Philip Francis Charles and the rest is history! Interestingly, Robert William Cox. Toonie's father was in the Indian Army and abandoned the family in the late 1800's and went to N America it is believed. He is proving very difficult to pin down. Eliza and Gertrude were twins being born at 40 Hufling lane within ten minutes of each other on 4/4/1879. Eliza married Harry Wilson on 5/7/1910 at St Stephens Burnley, they were both weavers. He was living at 4 Clive Street and she at 54 Hufling Lane. Harry's father was deceased and had been a clogger. Eliza's sister Ethel was a witness. Gertrude married also at St Stephens William Henry Wilkinson, a bachelor 32 year old Spinner living at 15 Pendle Street. I have no details yet on Ethel. Charles Percywas born on 6/8/1889 at 40 Hufling Lane and, whilst living at 182 Branch Road married Sarah Woodfin a 29 year old spinster domestic servant living at 60 Piccadilly Road. There was no issue. "Uncle Percy" as he was known, finally held a senior position with the Drug Supply Company, was a prominent Freemason with the Thursby Lodge and a passionate Burnley FC supporter. Hannah Whitehead died very prematurely aged 34 at 40 Hufling Lane from peritonitis which must have left her husband with his hands full. One might have expected that some of the children would have been farmed out to relatives but as far as I can see there are no signs of this from the addresses noted.

Nothing to offer. I had not heard of Crowther.
Post 7
Ditto. The Bridge name is also unknown to me.
Misc.
I have a marriage cert. for a Varley Whitehead and an Elizabeth Edmonson who married 17/8/1861 in Whalley Parish. He lived at East Gate, was a miner and his father Varley was a Jobber. Her father was Jacob, a weaver.
Hope some of this helps and look forward to any news you may have. Thanks again for all your help.
Regards Mike.

Hi Fran
there's a few more bits and pieces which might cast some light...................
Post 2
This Mary could be the daughter of Edward Quinn and Martha born 1865? There might also be a James 1868, and a George 1871. Is this the same William 1859 in Post 1? Its possible that nephew Adam was the child of Sarah who later went on to marry Ann Pounder on 15/7/1876.
Post 3
I think this Varley could be the son of Joseph Whitehead and Emma Johnson. I wonder if there is a Varley death between the censuses but as she retained her surname Varley might just have decamped!
Post 4
Strangely I have a note of his first wife being an Eliza Jones married 12/1/1867. I think William married twice, secondly to Ruth Linguard 7/1/1913 but thats a loooong time later and it may well be another Varley.

Blanc,
I noticed that you haven't been on this post since '05, but I thought I would give it a shot and respond to you here.
I have recently been looking up my family history and have found out that my great great great grandfather was Varley Whitehead. His daughter Sarah Spencer Whitehead would be my great great grandmother who was born in 1838. Sarah had a son named Matthias who would be my great grandfather who was born in 1882 and married Elizabeth. They moved to America in1920 on the Baltic.
Please let me know if you are interested in going over some family details.
I planning on studying in England in a couple years and would love to connect with family.

Hi
apologies for the delay in reply.
I cannot really add to the information that you will see here on Rootschat I'm afraid.
Presumably your Sarah Spencer Whitehead was the one born in around 1839. She was part of the second family that Varley sired by Ann/Hannah Spencer.
As part of your research you might like to think about joining the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society (LFHHS). They can be particularly helpful and in any case, with Varley, you have now reached a time frame where local input is going to be very important.
Best wishes
Blanc.
