I am researching Alice FUNNELL b 31st May 1884 Wheatbottom, Co Durham. Father John FUNNELL a plasterer Mother Ellen URIDGE. I don't think they were married and am trying to find connection with URIDGE and FUNNELL families in Lewisham.

It is rumoured that Alice was brought up by an Uncle and Aunt but when her aunt died she was placed in the Workhouse school at Isleworth, where she is shown in 1901 Census.

In 1891 she is shown with an Emery Family as below.

1891 Census
63 Wilford road
Croydon
Surrey

Emery, Edward 40 Dover, Kent Head
Emery, Catherine 39 Portsmouth, Hampshire Wife
Emery, Emily 14 Sittingbourne, Kent Daughter
Funnell, Alice 7 Durham Adopted

I am unable to find the EMERY's in any other census or any BMD for any of them.

Any help or suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

Thank you

Hi Roma,

Might have found the Emery family - well "an" Emery family - strange name Emily Emery - well there is one of the correct age living at Bromley, Kent - but is shown as having George and Jane as parents - RG11/858 - 129 page 59 -
Smiths Cottages, 14 High St, St Mary Cray, Kent

If you want the details let me know - meanwhile I will continue the search!!

Cheers

You can find a lot of information on Ellen Uridge, her siblings and ascendants in this one-name study here. But apparently Alice wasn't her daughter. She was that of Eliza Mary Uridge and John Funnell, both in their early teens when she was born, (look here). There is also info on Alice and her adoption by the Emery family here.

Hi Andy

Thanks very much for the information. Unfortunately it is erroneous information that I passed on to Teresa Pask. I have done a lot more digging since then and found Ellen URIDGE in the London Lunatic Asylum in 1891 and 1901 Census.
Haven't been able to trace her back. I must get hold of Teresa to amend the records.

Thank you again

Oh dear!

But that doesn't really invalidate the rest or does it?

No it definitely doesn't invalidate any of it. Teresa has done a lot of research.

Have you an interest in Alice FUNNELL? I have done a lot of research into her but my stumbling block is which John FUNNELL was her father. there are several candidates. I favour the South of London because of Ellen URIDGE ending up in the Lunatic asylum. They used to do that years ago to unmarried mothers.

I favoured the one from Lewisham because of his occupation 'Plasterer' which is the occupation of father shown on Alice's birth certificate, and the proximity of Eliza URIDGE to him.

Family lore has it that she was brought up by an auntie but the EMERY's she is with in 1891 have vanished into thin air no trace on any other census or BMD etc.

I will keep plodding on but have been researching thias for years now.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say that all of her research was invalidated. Just the bit about Ellen Uridge. In fact, she contends that Alice Funnell wasn't Ellen's daughter but the daughter of Eliza Mary Uridge (daughter of John Thomas Uridge and Sarah Spinks) and John Funnell. In this case, Eliza would have been 13 or 14 and John about 15 when Alice was born. It was probably more of a sin than nowadays but certainly must have happened.
Are you actually infirming this information? Or is this a working hypothesis?
It means that Ellen Uridge would have been Alice's aunt and a spinster of 37 at the time of her birth.
My interest is in the Funnell family.

Hi again Andy

The information on the Uridge website about Alice FUNNELL is from me.

I am still keeping my options open regarding her mother. In 1891 Census Alice is with the EMERY family in Croydon, Ellen URIDGE is in the Lunatic Asylum also in Croydon. The stumbling block is aklthough she is shown in the asylum on both 1891 and 1901 Censuses it doesn't show her place of birth.

There is also a John FUNNELL in Croydon at that time who was born in Portsmouth. Catherine EMERY, who Alice was with in 1891, was also born in Portsmouth. I am trying to find out if any connection between the two, but the EMERY family don't seem to appear in any other records.

I have been trying to find the records of the Lunatic Asylum but no luck up until now.

Roma

It would appear that the "London County Lunatic Asylum" was at Cane Hill, Coulsdon

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jeffery.knaggs/Instuts.html

so quite possibly what is/was known as Cane Hill Asylum/Hospital

and that there are some records at London Metropolitan Archives, Surrey History Centre and Croydon Archives (admissions & discharges from 1888)

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=48&hospital=&town=coulsdon&searchdatabase.x=0&searchdatabase.y=0

Hi Casalguidi

Thank you very much for that information. I will contact Croydon Archivist later and see if the records I want are there. They appear to be from the website.

Thank you once again.
