Ashton Percy
« on: Monday 09 May 05 12:35 BST (UK) »

Hi I am trying to find out what happened to my Great Uncle 27190 Percy Ashton he was apointed temperory second Lieutenant in the Northamptonshire Regiment (Infantry) I believe he was awarded a Military Medel on 26th June 1918 he joined at Northampton 31st. August 1914 and served 3yrs. 299days but seems to have dissapeared from view after his military service.
it does intimate in his pay book that he intended to take up a position  as a commercial Traveller after the war.
Prior to WW1 he was a Clerk I believe for a Peterborough company who were possibly an agent for a London company ??
I believe he returned home to 206 Cromwell rd. Peterborough after the war, but do not know for sure
Please can anybody help
Best Regards

Hello, Jim.

Are you still interested in information on Percy? He is one of the men from the Northamptonshire Regiment that I am researching.

I can't tell you much about his post war activities, except that he took a job with the Ministry of Labour in 1921, but I have quite a bit on his Army career.

Hi Steve
yes i am still interested in anything to do with Percy Charles Ashton i have found out he does have a middle name although it would seem he doesnt use it much.
I am sorry it has taken me a long time to reply but unfortunately I have had other important things to deal with. ie my wife is extreamly poorly so i havnt done much with the family histery lately.
was Percy related to you  Huh  if so we are probably related ?
I have lots of his war records for Percy, he was my great uncle my Grandfather's youngest Brother i do have photographs of Percy after his field promotion to second leutenant I also have his sitation and paybook etc.

Jim,

No. Not a relative. I'm (mainly) researching the 6th Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment in which Percy won his M.M. Also he was a local man to me in Peterborough, so a little easier to research than most.

I copied his Service Records at the National Archives yesterday, and having seen your posts on him, I thought I'd see if the information was of use to you. I'll compile some information for you and contact you by e-mail.

I can also let you have a copy of his service records, if you don't have them already.

Whilst I have a grainy newspaper photo of Percy, a proper photo image of him would be appreciated, plus any further details that I may not have (e.g. citation for his M.M. - I know when he won his M.M. - 10th August 1917, but not how.)

Regards,
Steve.

Hi Again steve
thanks for your reply, i would appreciate anything you may have with regard to Percy, I of course will recrocate with the info I have of wich there is quite a lot, I have his MM and the citation he recieved with it, although it is to big for me to scan. although i can get Photocopies made My brother works at a School in the print shop so coppies are no problem if you would like one but i would have to send it snail mail but that isnt a problem either.
think i did give you my email ad but just in case i didn't it is
jimashton7704hbs@aol.com

I did not know Percy was employed in the Ministry of Labour the only information i do have is that he was looking to get employment as a traveling Salesman after his war service obviously that didnt happen, I believe he died of TB in the 20's ( I believe cought during the war in France ) and i believe he is burried in the family grave in the Broardway Cemetery in Peterborough ( Plot 503 ) Along with his eldest Sister Fanny Elizabeth Ashton another very noteworthy Peterborough Resident Fanny died a 100 years ago in July she was a local Teacher at the Boys School from my records all the Schools in peterborough were closed for the half day for her Funeral also his Father James Willie ( a Railway Goods Guard based in Peterborough ) & Mother Elizabeth Ann and another sister  sister Amy who i believe died in the 1930's.
I do have photoes of Percy on my hard drive also of Percy's brothers but cannot name them i do know my grand father is not amongst them. so transfere is no problem. thank you again
Best Regards

Jim,

I'm putting together a bit of a narrative on Percy, and I'll e-mail you in due course.

In the meantime, I've attached a fairly poor quality photo of Percy that appeared in the Peterborough Advertiser of 20th October 1917. His cap badge is that of the Army Cyclist Corps.

I'll get back to you soon!
Steve.

Sorry, Jim.

Got halfway and then I realised I had a big gap between his commission and February 1919. Sorted that out yesterday. Looks like he was with 1st Battalion as an officer during 1918.
