Help,
I have just started uploading my html files to my webspace. My problem is that the background for each page (a .gif file) doesn't show up.
I have been using Netscape Composer to generate the pages and then to publish (upload). All the images associated with each file are transferred with that file except the background. I have also tried sending the background .gif file using the Microsoft ftp command (which worked), but the background still does not appear.
All suggestions welcome,
PeterB

Hi, You may have noticed that I said that I had uploaded parch.gif using my ftp utility. It still did not work. Ths morning (Oz time) I cleared out my site and sent a test index page which contained a few small images and a background. I first sent the index and image files with my FTP utility (and checked that they were there), I then sent the page again with the Publish command in Netscape Composer. All the files except the background file were uploaded and presumably overwrote the ftp'd files just sent.
I now have two problems 1. The background does not appear at all when viewed with Netscape. 2. The background appears as a series of stripes when viewed with Windows IE.
Have now resent my original index.html file using Composer. Results as above 1 and 2.
Any ideas welcome,
peterb desperate

Have given up. Have removed background image and opted for a nice pale blue page colour which seems to work with different browsers. Will now go and sulk for a while. I can then look forward to repeating procedure on 400 other files with same problem!
Cheers,

Atleast you have tried a few things (is there an option to "overwrite all" or something in Netscape composer which you can switch off?)
On your web page http://berry-family.rootschat.net/ I see that you now do have parch.gif uploaded to your site now.

and have this in your <body> tag and <div> tag:
<body style="background-image: url(parch.gif); color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: rgb(204, 255, 255);" alink="#000099" link="#000099" vlink="#990099"> <div style="text-align: center; color: rgb(0, 102, 0);"> Just to test, you may like to use:
<body background="parch.gif" style="background-image: url(parch.gif); color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: rgb(204, 255, 255);" alink="#000099" link="#000099" vlink="#990099"> Trystan

Thanks Trystan,
I think you have gone above and beyond here. I will have a play ad see how I go. I had tried a different image myself, to no avail. The new image would not upload either using Composer. I had to dos ftp it. I have even sent an email to the folks at Netscape. No reply yet. Will keep you posted. It's quite odd about the image file being corrupt. It's one I used several years ago when I was doing a Webpage Development unit as part of my IT course. It was OK at that time.

Trystan,
One of my problems was that Composer was not transferring the file. I had to ftp it. I have had a look through the preferences menu and nothing leaps out at me. I'll wait for a response from Netscape.
Thanks again,

Trystan,
I decided to add a rootschat counter to my index file. It works fine. BUT the background image file has disappeared from all my pages again in Netscape. Has it been corrupted? It is there ( only just) in IE. Composer seems to be doing something to the .gif file. No response from Netscape yet.
Thanks,
PeterB

It looks like your old 'corrupted' parchment image has been uploaded again and overwritten the other one. If you look in the directory (on your desktop computer) where your webpages are stored, you should see your parch.gif file - if so try deleting it from there (or better, keep it elsewhere) for now, and try uploading that image manualy.
It's strange becasue all the other images (including lines, arrows, bullet points, email icon etc) on your website are coming through fine. It's quite a puzzler!

Trystan, I have got it fixed!!!! Yesterday, when I uploaded all my files, I used dos ftp to do it. Lo and behold, the image files did not work. So I used Composer to publish a single file containing those images files to see if that would work. And it did. Those .gif files started working. So my strategy was to create a page with the .gif file which I want as a background, but embed it as an image instead. It worked. Composer must be changing the .gif file as it uploads. For some reason it can't see the background file and doesn't upload it.
Still no reply from Netscape
Thanks for all your help.
Over and out (I hope)
