Has anyone got any recommendations for a company to go with for hosting a website. I want to put my tree on the internet but don't know who is best. I don't want adverts - especially pop-ups!
Based in the UK by the by.
Cheers, Pam

:)Hi Trystan, been at rootsweb for a while now and never had any probs with ads or popups, I admit that ones pages carry a small ad, but nothing extravagant,(and its always genealogy related) and you can't complain at that for a free resource and unlimited webspace, we can't have it all, can we? ? (mind you some think they should!!!!!!) Anne

Hi, I did not read most of the answers, but you have three options. Firstly, do you want any sort of dynamic stuff, e.g a database? Second, do you mind pop ups, - answer was no. Third, do you want to just have html pages?
In answer to these questions, Lycos offer a free web area with popups. My university offers a free area for static html pages, and nothing else (pretty normal) for Uni users only. Last< - I use ipowerweb.com for a fairly cheap web hosting solution - I cannot even remember how much it costs, but it is pretty good - about £60 a year?? this gives me an amazing amount of space for html and other files, frontpage usage, good online support (most of the time), and a couple of databases using php as a scripting language. If you do not know what I am talking about,, then neither did I when I first signed up, and the support guys wrote my first scripts for me - bless them. Your money, your choice, I guess. Best Kevan

Kevan, that's very good advice.
Comments:
If you are in the UK, you can sign up with some Internet Service Providers which will give you lots of free space and also allow you to do fancy things that Kevan mentions. One such company (for example) is "PlusNet" which we use for our connection to the internet at home: http://www.plus.net
Whatever type of webspace you get, the key is to actually use it, and to try and make it as interesting as possible. The more you tinker with it, the more you will learn, and before long you might be asking for things like "SQL" "Perl" - but if you do get to that stage, you can copy your website and move it to a better place.
Trystan [Please folks - we are getting a bit "off topic" from Genealogy and Family History here]

Thanks for all the replies
Lots to think about. Kind of on and off topic I guess as it is the spreading of genealogical info I 'm interested in.
At present I have no need for a database as I don't have a vast tree, lots of illegitimacies so directs are halved on a number of generations.
I will investigate all.
A more on topic question - am I okay to publish all census material I have transcribed myself?
Thanks, Pam
