Lookup please Castletown Ellinor QUAYLE
« on: Saturday 26 November 11 15:35 GMT (UK) »

Hi
I am looking for the parents/siblings of my 4xg grandmother Ellinor Quayle b abt 1806 Castletown, Isle of Man.

She married John Clews 17 Jan 1827 in Malew (IGI but  no further details). I have found her on the 1851 and 1861 IOM census, she is living in Hope Street, Castletown, Malew. (1841 they were in Australia). Any help would be appreciated.

Hi
Have you had any success with Ellinor, yet? Where are you based?

I found an item on Family History which suggests that she was Ellen rather than Ellinor. I don't know if you have this?

I live on the Island near to Castletown and Malew Chirch. I am hoping to go to do some research of my own at the church very soon, but have to contact the vicar first. If you would like me to see what I can find for you, I am happy to do that. Just let me know.

Regards
Doreen Moule

there is no point in bothering the church - all records are held at Manx Museum - also the iMuseum will shortly have images of original reg.
She is buried as Eleanor (in transcribed reg age 50 in 1865 - however this conflicts with marriage - and age in 1851 census when back in Hope street tho in 1861 age 53 - she would appear to be born c.1805-1808 - in all she is consistent with Mal/Castletown birth
There are no obvious matches except d/o Wm Quayle + Margt Christian - bapt Malew 18080605 though extracted record just has mother as Christian (which is possibly a 1st or  a family name) - I can't find Wm in 1841 (suspect might be 55yr old buried 1832) - Margt might be 60yr old pauper in 1841 tho I suspect she might have died earlier possibly 66yr old in 1834 - Wm Quayle + Margt m in Rushen 18020508 tho 1st child bapt 6months earlier - however no obv baptismal matches for a margt christian other than an illeg Margt bapt 1769 in Ochan

Thankyou both, 2 replies same day.Frances_mnb thankyou for the info but what do the numbers mean?
bapt Malew 18080605 and m in Rushen 18020508? There are no dates so are these something to do with dates? Sorry for my ignorance!

I will follow up the leads that you have given me, thankyou.

Doreen,
I live in Cardiff, Wales. If you get a chance to go to the church and have a wander in the graveyard.............any info would be good  Wink.

I am new at this too so haven't actually done any private messages but if we have both posted 3 times I am sure we can work it out and exchange info.

18080605 = 5 day 6th month 1808
- no point in wandering around Malew yard - too large - try asking on http://www.isle-of-man.com/genealogy/messageboard/index.pl if there is a MI (Memorial Inscription - grave marker) - if so then there is a map of yard in the transcription of these MI's by IoM Fam Hist Soc (see www.iomfhs.im) - Ellinor + John Clews are also buried in that yard so ask re them as well

look at my site www.manxnotebook.com re info + pics of churches - Castletown was a chapel of ease to Malew
