Hi everybody, and welcome to the Immigrants Board
As there are not enough topics to warrant a separate board for each country, we would like to ask you to use the following guidelines when posting:
If the search country is obvious, the first part of your title should be the name of the country, followed by a colon and a space i.e. Germany: France: India: (For queries about British India) Italy: Prussia: Poland: etc.
and a special interest group: Huguenots:
and maybe E. Europe: for cases where the "county of origin" was at different times, in Poland, Ukraine, Austro-Hungary, Prussia etc.
You can the then click on Subject at the top of the page to sort all topics according to country, which will help us all to find "like-minded" souls.
"Mixed" countries and "uncertain" will be trickier to sort, we'll think about that later !
The Moderators will edit existing titles, bit by bit.
Another good reason, for including the name of the country,
e.g. "INDIA: looking for Fred" rather than just "Looking for Fred"
is that we have Rootschatters here, who know quite a lot about certain countries, and will therefore be more likely to look at your postings.

As one of the most commonly asked questions is "Where do I start ?" I have "stickied" a few interesting topics.
Read these through, and also the topics in the "Immigrants Resources Board"
The first place to start is with a question: Were they naturalised British Subjects ?
Read Topic: RootsChat Topics - Naturalisation and Internment http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,157691.0.html and check out any other topics with the words Naturalisation or Aliens in the title to find out where to look for answers, and what is in the Naturalisation papers.
BUT: be prepared to accept that they may not have been naturalised at all, because, for a variety of reasons, not everybody did !
Good hunting, and if you find any good sources of information, please, let us know
Bob

Just a quickie question - can we use this board for immigration queries to countires other than the UK? For example, I have some relatives who emigrated from Russia to Australia? Perhaps someone has experience/contacts with research in Russia? (Or other non-English speaking countries).

Hi Engirusaus,
In general we have two boards for "from other countries",
Immigration - people coming to Great Britain from other countries and
Emigration - people emigrating to S. Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Cananda and the U.S.A. The emphasis here is on emigrating from G.B. but you will also find queries about emigrating from other parts of Europe. (Rest-Europe)
Most material about leaving Rest-Europe is on the Immigrants boards.
The best thing is to put your questions on the specific Emigrants board, because the trail is often followed backwards, from shipping lists etc, and there are people on those boards with expertise on this.
... and put the country of origin in the title, as that often catches peoples' eyes.
BUT
read the Immigrant Resources board for useful links, and maybe some of the Immigrant queries, concerning countries you are interested in.
see also Topic: Immigrant Resources = Emigrant Resources ?? http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,116010.0.html where I've said much the same thing.
