"Hexham Courant"s family history page
« on: Tuesday 10 May 05 10:07 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know how often the family history page of the "Hexham Courant" is updated?

Seems to have been a while when I looked this morning

Where did you find it? I went and had a look as I used to live in Hexham as well as having recently discovered an ancestor from there, but couldn't find it. I might be able to find out some more once I have seen it.

Hi Nick,

This is the Hexham Courant page: http://www.hexham-courant.co.uk/

and this seems to be the family history page:
http://www.hexham-courant.co.uk/forums/viewmessages.asp?topicid=38&forumid=5
or
http://www.hexham-courant.co.uk/forums/
Seems you can "view"but you have to register to "post"

(found by googling for "hexham courant family history")

Good luck,
Bob

We could of course freak out the Hexham Courant by suddenly posting dozens of queries ... looks like the site hasn;t been used for a few years! Smiley

I posted a couple of queries 2 weeks ago and they haven't appeared yet. Hence my original posting on here.

I also answered a couple of other peoples questions and they haven't been posted either. Sorry about that as I think I have found some long lost relations there.

Should we be charitable and guess maybe someone there is on leave or sick???

Not sure I could see any posts that have been answered. I suspect that the best way of getting some information is to submit a letter to the editor. The paper does seem to be read very thoroughly by the local populace and letters about family roots are always popular. Alternatively a letter to the editor suggesting that as it seems rather difficult to get a reply to a query in their forum, that they should carry a link to RootsChat where they are more likely to get a response.

I've used the Courant Family History Forum with some success (eventually), but the set-up is definitely not user-friendly. I reported my concerns last year to the Courant Office, but the site is controlled by some outside organisation that  seems to have no interest in altering their system. Very frustrating and I've given up on it.

Have been reading, with interest about the Hexham Courant. I would be interested if anyone could tell me about the paper from Haydon Bridge. I found a website for it on google search, had an email address to send  queries, so sent one off about the name Maughan I am interested in, also if anyone could tell me about the work done in the early 1900,s. I hadn't heard fro ages, only to have the email returned not able to be delivered.

The Hexham Courant is the local paper for a very large area, which is (approximately) along the Tyne valley from the border with Durham to the border with Cumberland in the West. It more or less follows the county border in the south, although it covers Alston (don't know if any other papers cover this area). To the north, it goes right up the North Tyne valley. I remember from my school days in Hexham that some children had to board in Hexham during the week because it was too difficult to get there and back on a daily basis. We are talking of about one third of Northumberland.

In the early days, there may have been other papers that were amalgamated into what became the Courant (or  they may have simply folded) but I'm not aware of any specifically for Haydon Bridge,

I found a website dedicated to North Pennine Ancestors (sorry didn't save the URL) where you might like to check for Haydon Bridge references. It's not as well used as RootsChat, but may be used by people who don't use this site.

Hi Twiggy,

It's me again - interested to see your further postings about the Maughan name. Daisy Maughan's brother Nicholas is the grandfather (possibly great-grandfather) of my sister-in-law, so you must be related ...

About the Hexham Courant. They have a family history forum you could try. I got one good lead from that, but basically it is quite infuriating. I had a reply from someone saying they had information, photos etc about the person in question but he has never come back again!

Cheers,

Ros

Dear Ros,
I was so thrilled to hear from you. If you do get any info from your sister in law or any one else I would be so grateful if you can contact me again.
