Ricketts
« on: Tuesday 10 May 05 10:42 BST (UK) »

My Ricketts are actually Rickarts - Richard Ricketts was Richard Rickarts.

Looking at houseofnames.com, this is what they said about the surname -

"First found in Kent, where this Huguenot family, originally Ricquart or Ricard, migrated to the west and settled at Combe, Hereford"

What exactly does it mean? Are all Ricketts related? And whats Huguenot?

Huguenots were one of a number of Protestant sects who left their native lands to pursue religious freedom elsewhere.  In this case they left France (usually) and came to England.

Googling found this site:

I've just come across your thread. Interesting. My son in law is a Ricketts and his family have been in Australia since 1840, coming from Horsley in Gloucestershire. I have traced the line for him and have a Richard Ricketts born there 1735, father Nathanial born 1712. Would be interesting if you are related. Roy

I haven't made a lot of progress on my Ricketts line, as I've only got back to around the 1790s, so at the moment I can't say whether our Ricketts are connected or not.
