Hi,
Can anyone help? I'm trying to find out more about my gggrandmother Ann (aka Anne or Annie) Gray née Jefferson and her parents. What I have so far is that she was born in Wigton, Cumberland c1832/1833. Her father is given on her marriage certificate as William Jefferson (bootmaker). By 1861 she had moved to Liverpool to work as a servant so I can't find her with her parents in that census.
Is it feasible for someone to do a lookup in the 1841/1851 census for Wigton to see if there is any trace of Annie and her father there? One other possible clue I have is the baptism record in IGI of Anne Jefferson, 13 JAN 1833 Wigton, Cumberland, England, parents William Jefferson & Mary. I'd love to get confirmation of Annie's mother's name; also any dates, places of birth and any information about siblings would be wonderful!
Many thanks in advance,
Ann

Hi Ange,
Thanks so much for looking. I wonder if they had already moved to Liverpool at that point. Oh well, the hunt goes on

Hi,
Through various research in IGI and census returns I now believe that the family was living in Westward, Cumberland in 1841. Would it be possible for someone to do a lookup in 1841/1851 in Westward to see if Annie is in the same household as William and Mary Jefferson to confirm that I have linked her to the correct parents. Annie would be about 8 in 1841. Also, any information about age and place of birth of William and Mary would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Ann

Hi Anita,
Although I've managed to do a fair amount more research since I posted this request, I haven't found out enough to make a connection between your Jeffersons and mine.
William Jefferson was born in 1785 (he was christened in Bolton on 27 February 1785). He was the son of William Jefferson and Francis George. I have found two more siblings on the IGI (batch C043041). Mary was christened on 24 April 1782 and John on 27 February 1785 - presumably he was William's twin. I imagine that there must have been more children as this seems a very small family for the period but I haven't yet found any.
There seem to be a lot of Jeffersons in the area at the time but unfortunately I haven't been able to track down any information on when or where William senior was born or who his parents were so I'm unable to link him in to any of the other families.
Sorry I can't be of more help at the moment.
Ann

Hello Anita, I live in Cumbria and am related to the same Nathanial Jefferson of Postrigg, Westward, Wigton. My Great, great, great grandmother (Nancy) was his second daughter to his frist wife Mary Martindale. He had 4 daughters to Mary before she died in 1787. He married again (Elizabeth crosthwaite) in 1788 and had a further four daughters and one son. Robert 1790. Esther 1793, jane, 1795, Sarah 1798 and Matilda 1800. Have more data if you require it. I am aware of a link to Colt Park Boarding school in Holm Cultram and am trying to research this further. Any info you may have might help this search. Regards Mo

Hi Mo
I wasn't even aware that he had been married twice! His daughter Jane from his second marriage was my GGGG Grandmother. She married a William Wilkinson.
I'd very much appreciate any more info you have. I'll send a message with my email details.
Anita
