I would be grateful if someone could look up Thomas Rance in the 1861 census of Berkshire.
Should be at Binfield born around 1860. Sorry I have no other family details.

Glorialee, we are researching the same Rance family. I'm wondering how far back you've been able to research?
In the 1951 census, John and Eliza Rance are living with John's mother Hannah Rance, widow, aged 69 born Hurst Berks. As the previous poster stated, John and Eliza's children are listed up to John (junior) at 1 month old.
Also in this household in 1851 are: Hannah's daughter Lucy, Lucy's new husband Charles Butler, and Hanna's son James, unmarried aged 23.
It is this James Rance (John's brother) that is my husband's ancestor. Our branch of the family married into the Talbots of Oxfordshire and then one son moved to Canada in the early 1900's. So we are Rances in Canada now.
I've obtained the record of marriage of James Rance to Mary Richardson and James' father is stated as Thomas Rance.
The 1841 census for Wokingham in Wiltshire (boundary changed after that so Wokingham now in Berks) shows a Thomas and Hannah Rance with daughters Ann, Sarah and Lucy with ages that match the later census records.
You are probably aware of all this (I'm new at this). Unfortunately marriage records aren't available on public record for the time that Hannah and Thomas would have married.
Have you had any leads from other Rance histories?
Thanks for the information on your ancestor - when we visit Wokingham in coming years we'll have a weathervane to look for

Hello Rance in Canada,
Hi also to Gloralee. I also have an interest in John and Eliza Rance.
You said that in 1951 (I presume you meant 1851) John and Eliza Rance were living at the same address as Hannah Rance age 69 and her son, James, dau Lucy, and son in law, Charles Butler.
That is NOT so. Hannah was living in Wiltshire Lane Wokingham 1693/254/4/18, and John and Eliza were living in Binfield 1694/454/5/18 according to the Berkshire fhs 1851 cd.
Added to which John Rance 1807, according to my research, was the illeg son of Mary Rance who went on to marry William Boyer in 1810. Mary was dau of John Rance and Mary Willis (one of 9)unless my research is all to pot. She did have a brother Thomas 1793 but he was a bit young to have married Hannah Wells in 1812 at Hurst, although not impossible. Mary's brother Thomas, however, is the one in the 1851 married to an Elizabeth with 3 sons, John, Thomas and Marlow, I am fairly sure.
My interest is that John 1807 and Eliza's son James Rance 1846 married my kinswoman, Mary Ann Sellwood in 1866 and had 8 children.
I would be interested in the 1841 census details that you mention, though, in case I have got it all wrong.

The 1841 census for Wokingham in Wiltshire (boundary changed after that so Wokingham now in Berks)
Unfortunately it is not that simple. Five parishes in the middle of Berkshire were part of Wiltshire. Only one sixth of Wokingham was in Wiltshire and while this included the parish church the rest of the town was in Berkshire. These parishes, which included Hurst were "peculiars" of the Dean of Salisbury but were moved to the Oxford diocese in 1836. However the remainder of the town of Wokingham was only transferred to Berkshire in 1845 and the Dean of Salisbury transferred his patronage of All Saints church to the Bishop of Oxford in 1846.
The implication of all this for genealogists is that some but not all of the records for Wokingham are in the Wiltshire Record Office rather than the Berkshire Record Office.
There are various records of the Rance family in Wokingham spread around the town's history. For example Rances Lane is named after the Rance family who were licensees of the Plough Inn for more than fifty years from the middle of the 19th century. The Inn which was initially probably little more than a beershop stood on the corner of the Lane. It was later rebuilt in its current position further along the London Road.

The Wilts/Berks boundary changes do complicate things... and I'm new at this so any corrections or guidance is much appreciated. It does appear that the research method I used for the 1851 census, not being able to see the digital photo of the records themselves, returned two separate households, both with the HH number 18, and I put them together in my records as one family.
Backtracking 10 years, the 1841 Census shows Hannah and Thomas Rance (along with daughters Ann, Sarah and Lucy - no John) living in Ashridge Wood near Wiltshire Farm and this record is in the *Wilts* census that year. The Rances stayed there for a few generations, in fact our ancestor Henry Rance's mother Mary Richardson, died there at the home at Bennings Cottages, acc to her death certificate. In the area are also: Ashridge, Farm, Norreys Farm, Norris Barn, Bennings Cottage, Braybrook? or Buckwood?, Billingsbear and Warren Farm etc. and in later censuses this general area is consistently within the Berks boundary. Any information on where exactly Bennings Cottage may have been, would be wonderful to know (there is a modern Bennings Way road). The wierd part is that this area on some of our ancestors' *birth* certificates is recorded as Binfield, Berks and not part of Wokingham.
I stand corrected on the 1851 Census - I used Ancestry's search tool with filters to find Rances living in *Berkshire Binfield*. I don't have an Ancestry membership to access the complete records, but the pop-up tags for each name show which household they belong to. In this case it was HH18. Then I used the filters to show who was listed as Head, Wives, Sons, Daughters, Daughters-in-Law, etc. When I look at the FHS CD record numbers you give for the same people, the last number on each household is 18. So the Ancestry filters would have caught two HH18's in two districts within Berks. I guess that John and Eliza aren't part of our family history (sigh!)
I have not sent for John Rance and Eliza Hall's marriage certificate but had searched for the accession information. I'm sure you already have the record but it can be found at: Apr-Jun 1841 District: Wokingham Vol 6 Page 441. It should list the names of the fathers of the bride and groom.
The 1841 Census search shows John and Eliza Rance living in Binfield Berks at the Shoulder of Mutton public house. I may be able to access the image of the census records still if anyone is interested. The digital versions are likely the only records I'll be using from herein

It is likely that Benning Way was named after Richard Benning who was farmer at Ashridge Farm I think around 1870. However it is also likely that the cottage was also associated with the farm.
Returning to your confusion about Binfield or Wokingham. Until 1885 when Wokingham became a borough most of the farms which you mention above would have been in Binfield.
It was Norreys Barn not Norris Barn. This has a modern pub named after it.
Most of the places which you named are within a few miles of where I live although many are represented by modern estate or street names rather than the original farms and cottages. I know the history of a number of them
