(COMPLETED) - MENZIES Family (Coal Miners)
« on: Wednesday 11 May 05 06:36 UTC (UK) »

John Menzies (Coal Miner) was killed on 11 November 1902.  I am trying to ascertain the name of the coal mine he was killed in and circumstances surrounding the accident.  All I know at this stage is that he was found dead at the 4th Pull No. 5 Pit West Longrigg.  I have searched the Durham Mining Museum, but they only seem to list the names of those killed in mining accidents where 5 or more people were killed.  Can anybody help.

Hi Mollydog,

Try searching on Google for West Longrigg Pit, Stirlingshire.

You'll get tons of sites but you might have to do a lot of reading to find who you're looking for.

Good Luck!

Hi

Janet Menzies was married to John Leckie a grocer originally from Gargunnock and who settled in Lennoxtown.  John died in 1855 and Janet in 1854 aged 84.  Their daughter Janet died aged 78 in November 1881. All three are buried in Lennoxtown.  Their son William became a farmer in Gooseholm and married Marjory Stevenson in 1840 in Dumbarton.  They had 8 children, all of whom were born in Dumbarton.

John's parents were Alexander Leckie and Helen Keir who married in Balfron 5/12/1767.  If you have any information on Alexander and who his parents & siblings were, I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Mollydog,

I know this is an old post and completed, but I would be interested in what you have found concerning John Menzies death.

My wife is a direct descendant (MS Menzies) and has the family bible detailing the entire family, his parents including of course John's demise.

We have all of the published information concerning his death and of course his brother Richard's death in almost identical circumstances many years earlier.

This family had a great deal of tragedy and many other siblings died very young.

Please let me know if you have any info and of course I will reciprocate.

Hi, thanks for your post.

My grandmother was the daughter of John Menzies.  You mentioned that your wife is a direct descendant of "MS Menzies".  Who is "MS Menzies" and where does he/she fit in to the family?

Regards

Hi Mollydog,

My wife's maiden surname is Menzies and her grandfather was Thomas Warden Menzies (John's younger brother). Their father John Menzies snr,  was married twice ( 1st to Marion Lumsden and later to Isabella Warden and between them had a total of 17 children.

Female siblings were Mary, Rachel, Margaret, Marion* and Jane*. Perhaps your Grandmother was one of these sisters. They were all half sisters to Thomas and full sisters to John jnr.

* died in infancy

Hope this helps a little and should you need any further info please let me know.

Regards
