I am trying to trace a Thomas Wright born in Kendal about 1830. All I know is that he met a Sarah Fletcher who was born in Bassenthwaite in 1828, and that they were on the Oldham 1871 census.
Would be grateful for any help, regards, Josie

You have obviously not seen a copy of the 1871 census. Oldham P 4094 F14 Thomas Wright Head 61 Sawyer & Turner b Kendal Sarah Wright wife 43 Charwoman b Crossthwaite Cumberland Mary Jane Fletcher dau 17 Cotton Operative Ann Fletcher dau 12 Cotton Operative. Both girls born in Cockermouth Cumb. This would imply that Sarah was a widow with two daughters when he married her. It is possible that he was married before too but his children have now moved away. Food for thought..... Andrea

Never jump to conclusions!! She was not a widow. In 1861 Sarah Fletcher, unmarried, is in the Workhouse in Cockermouth with her daughters. P3936 F 86 Sarah Fletcher 34 unm Servant b Bassenthwaite Mary Jane 8 Ann 2 both b Cockermouth
In 1861 Thomas is in Thornthwaite, Crosthwaite P 3933 F 18 Sawmill Cott No 2 Thomas Wright wid 52 Woodturner and gardener b Kendal Cecily Wright da 13 Housekeeper Jane Wright da 11 scholar both born Sedbergh Yorks
I meant to point out the age for Thomas in my last post. He was born c 1810 not 1830. Andrea

Andrea, Thanks for your replies.
I had a reply to an earlier posting saying Thomas Wright was 41 on the Oldham census 1871. I have since seen a copy for myself and noted the age difference!!! What I cannot find is a record of a marriage between Sarah Fletcher and Thomas Wright. Rightly or wrongly I assumed they had met in the Workhouse and not being able to afford a wedding, moved out of the area to Lancashire?? I was hoping someone could confirm he was in Cockermouth Workhouse at the same time as Sarah. Will keep plodding on.
Cheers, Josie

Hi,
I was looking though the 1841 and 1851 census records at Sedbergh and had a look for your Thomas Wrigtht. I couldn't see him or his family, however the entries are very difficult to read and if anyone has the transcribed versions you could check again. Maybe he came to Sedbergh and left again between the two census returns.
The was one record there under the baptisms:-
Cicely (yes spelt like that), daughter, of Fanny and Thomas Wright, Bobbin Turner, baptised 3 sept 1848.
nothing in 1850 or 1851 for Jane
Hope this helps (even if negatively)
Shelagh

Thanks for your repy Shelagh, I've only just read it, comp not been on this week-end!!!
A while ago I rec'd a reply saying a Thomas Wright was on the Oldham census for 1871 age 41. I was able to check that out but his age was 61? He had married a Sarah Fletcher (my g.g. grandma) but where or when I can't find out.
I'll get there eventually - hopefully, thanks again.
Josie

Hi, yes I'm still looking for any info on Sarah Fletcher, she was born 1828 in Bassenthwaite. She seems to have had a hard life, on the 1851c she was in prison in Carlisle, on the 1861c she was in the Cockermouth Workhouse, unmarried but with 2 children, Mary Jane and Ann. I would like to know if she is on the 1841c with her parents (if she had any)or she may have been in the Workhouse.

It is to the east of Cockermouth on the A591 - just north of Bassenthwaite lake. Andrea
