LIST: Pre-1841 census details
« on: Wednesday 11 May 05 21:13 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Following up an earlier thread, below are the pre-1841 censuses in London that I have been able to find, along with their location. I'm not certain this is complete, but I think this lists most of them. Please post any additions or corrections.

A few things to bear in mind if you intend to search any of these records.
1. Most censuses list *at best* the head of household and occupation (The only exceptions to this I'm aware of are one or two of the small City parishes, which are more detailed)
2. Several of the most useful Middlesex censuses have been published on CDROM or fiche by local family history societies. (Also Sylviaann takes requests for searches for Hackney and Poplar)
3. In some cases you would be as well of looking at the land tax records. These list the head of household, and usually the street. Their advantages are: (a) the assessment was yearly, so you can trace the exact period over which someone leased/rented a property, (b) the records are usually easy to read, (c) the records are extensive, sometimes covering a century or more, (d) you get an assessment of the propery value. The downside is access to the records -- they have not been put on CDROM (most of them are at GL, LMA or WCA)

Thanks for this Mike, very useful.  I'll move it to London Resources where it will be most easily found.

Just a small change:

Marylebone 1821 & 1831 census at now at Westminster City Archives, the local history section of the Marylebone library closed down some while ago.

There is a commercially produced index to these two census on CD.
