Does anyone know of a Bulls Head Inn/Pub still standing in 1947 in or near Salford?? I am searching for any information on a James Harry Smith who worked there. The pub may have been owned by his sister?? I dont know her name.
I would be most grateful for any information as to the pub or James Smith.
Hi Gillie, send an email requesting the information you require regarding the pub to information.centre@salford.gov.uk They may even be able to tell you where old records for the pub are kept - they should have archives somewhere that they can access. Cheers, Cougar

Researching STANLEY, EWENS, BARBER, WOOD, WHILLANCE, ROSSER,REYNOLDS, SPILLER This information is Crown Copywrite. from the www.national archives.go.v.uk.
The 'Bulls Head' is/was a very common name for licensed premises and Salford encompasses(d) quite a few areas/sub districts. So in the general area you may be looking at 3 or 4 different premises. I would think that without an address you would have to look at Licenses granted to get details of who applied for a particuliar License at each pub..
If you can tie down an address and or name then you could always double against a census record.

Hi Skippy, Many thanks for your reply. I recently had this email come in which says -
There was a Bull's Head at 55 Derwent Street, Salford which survived the war, closing in 1955. Neil Richardson's book on Old Pubs of Salford says that the Licensees were Frank & Nellie Ward in the 1940s -50s.
The beerhouse was owned by George Hardy, whose business originated in Salford at the Ordsall Lane Brewery (as Joseph Hardy & Son) but moved in about 1865 to the Ellesmere Brewery, Hulme, and finally to the Crown Brewery in 1889. We're not sure if the pub closed as a Hardys house or not.
I have tried to find the marriage of Frank and Nellie Ward to see if her maiden name might be Smith as the pub could have been owned by james Harry Smith's sister....he is said to have worked at the pub and his sister is said to have "owned" it.
If anyone can add to any of the above I would be most grateful.
