Hi all, new to this and really would appreciate your help as I am stumped.  I would like to find out my grandmother's mother's maiden name.  My grandmother was born July 1904, Ivy Annie Humphreys.  I have tried and tried but to no avail so if anything can help or suggest anything I really would appreciate it.  Thank you.

So Humphreys was the name she was born with or was the surname of the man she married?

When and where did she get married?  What was your grandfather's christian name?

Ah, have re-read and see that you're looking for your great grandmother's maiden name.

I've found Ivy on the 1911 census and her father's name was Charles William Humphreys and her mother's name was Caroline.
I can't find a marriage for them at the moment.

You might have to buy the birth certificate for Ivy to see what her mother's maiden name was.

Looks like her maiden name was Cruikshank.

Well done Sharon.

Thanks for the welcome Captain 2, I've never heard of free BDM (clearly I have a lot to learn!) and have only used Ancestry.  Thanks again all.  Now I know her surname I am hoping I can find out where she was born and more about her background.

Hello Aliss06, if there are any questions you have or feel that we can help you with your research please do fire away.. I'm certain everyone here will be more than pleased to help if they can.  Free BMD (births, marriages & deaths) is available on-line  and covers from registration 1837 onwards, it is an on-going transcription project so new details are always being added.  Like-wise 'Free Reg' (Parish Registers)  which again is a transcription project and is on-line, offers parish transcriptions pre-1837 - very useful! Do you use 'familysearch.org' they again offer invaluable on-line information, but beware of 'submitted entries' these are not always accurate.  Infact there a number of very useful sources, I have mentioned just a few. Certificates (marriage, birth, death) are always extremely useful and sometimes offer a wealth of hidden information.

Have fun with your research  Wink and if you need help just ask

Kind Regards

Angie

Hi Angie,

Thanks so much, I've just been looking through Free BMD and what an interesting site that is.  I'm sure I'll be able to make good progress now - she says hopefully!

I will shout if I get stuck again especially after such a good response from everyone so far!

Hi all me again- trying to find a birth record for Caroline Cruikshank but not having any luck.  I can't find her on the 1891 census either although she does appear on the 1901 census.  Any ideas where else I could look please?.  I have tried Ancestry and FreeBMD.  According to the 1901 census she was born in Camberwell in 1881.  Thank you.
