New Family History Game Resource!
« on: Thursday 12 May 05 16:18 BST (UK) »

Hi all

Just musing over ancestors and had a light bulb  Roll Eyes wouldn't it be intresting to design a board game or role play game or something multiplayer re family history, you know the type of thing ..... mission is to uncover the ancestor find the missing wills, gold, lost houses, maps inheritance, titles, work your way up to baron etc and avoid the scandals and skeltons in the closet!  Put the resources you need in your belt, eg spells for reading old handwriting, translations, GPS satellite to find the village etc.

What say ye rootschatters?  Am I completely barking mad and should be locked up in an asylum to be forgotten for 100 years? or is it just ramblings from a family historian.  Your thoughts, musings and general perceptions on this malady would be greatly appreciated.  Grin

Great idea John!   When you have worked it all out, designed, patented and marketed it just let me know - I'll buy one!

Hi John

I approached a firm about 5 years ago with the same idea, I was told THERE IS NOT ENOUGH INTEREST IN GENEALOGY. Shocked

I then had to send a copy to myself with the idea inside  a sealed envelope, should the company ever come up with the game in the future, it is supposed to mean I was the originator of the idea.

Full of good ideas me, but it has never got me anywhere, good luck on your try,

Jakky.

You'd have to start as a Ag Lab and work your way up.  Maybe get extra points for Royal or Famous connections?  What about missing a turn for 'family misinformation' or 'stonewalling'Huh

with a touch of Cluedo thrown in for good measure...you know, certificates in an envelope instead of cards....have you got the right person in the right place at the right time.  Get it wrong and go back to start!!!

Sounds familiar?

Sure does flipster, great combination of classic genre games.  How about space invaders, you know the government red tape syndrome!  Shoot them up and get to next level of research, Galaxians shoot the big boss at end of levels etc.

Family history definitely leads you out of your tree!  Shocked

The Cluedo idea sounds fun - you know Annie Mustard in the workhouse with consumption. Then you have to find out she is really Hannah and not Mustard but Moward and then you have spent £15 of your starting money on useless certificates so back to Go and throw a 6 to move for another clue card. On reading that I find it a bit confusing - like Family History. Roll Eyes

Jakky, I suggest you lodge your idea with a bank or solicitor or something.  It's not unknown for companies to reject ideas and promptly nick them with no acknowledgement and no payment.  Some years ago my cousin came up with the idea for a board game and sent it to one of the big companies.  They politely turned it down.  A few months later the company brought out a game almost identical to the one my cousin had submitted.  But he had no proof that he'd sent it to them.  Beware - they're probably manufacturing your family history game right now.

Hi Suttontrust,

Somewhere I have a sealed letter with the idea in and it had to be signed by someone before I posted it to myself, it remains unopened somewhere, I will have to see if I can find it.

Mind you, such things dreams are made of and I cannot ever see anything comming of it. It was only a rough idea anyway, but thanks for the advice it is certainly worth thinking about.

Cheers
Jakky.
