Toll Collector
« on: Thursday 12 May 05 18:29 BST (UK) »

I have recently discovered that my ancestor Thomas Snowdon, and his wife Mary, were toll collectors.  On the 1871 census for Norton,  Durham.    Mary, a recently widowed lady, is shown as living  in    Darlington Lane Toll Gate   having taken over the task of Toll Collector.

I have tried to find information via the web of a Toll Gate in this area at this time, but have come up with nothing.  Is there anybody out there who knows anything about this?

Hello Lindy,

Have you asked the Darlington Historical Society if they know of the Toll Gate?

Hi Lindy

I can't help with where the toll was but if do a name search on Durham Archives site you might find they have some records.

My 2, 3 & 4 x great grandfather's were toll collectors & I managed to get copies of the agreements they'd made & signed from the archives.

Hopefully you'll be as lucky

Lindy,

Coming out of central Stockton heading north west, is the
"Durham Road" (today the A177)

Darlington Lane ran from Norton to Darlington, cutting across the top of Stockton,  and then via Sadberge.

When Darlington Lane running east>west crosses the Durham Road it forms a busy crossroads. Today Darlington Lane becomes Darlington Back Lane westwards of Durham Road.

On the North-East corner of the x-roads(today) is a large pub called the Mile House... supposedly one mile out of central stockton.

On the South-West corner was Toll Bar Cottage. This appears on maps from, at leat 1860s to 1930s.

I left Stockton (Darlington Lane) about 7 years ago, and if my memory serves me well, this corner now is home to a fenced off electricity grid building.

And this area today would be Stockton rather than Norton.

I have a hunch that even though the Snowdon's front door may have been on Darlington Lane (now D. Back Lane) the Toll Gate/Bar would have been on Durham Road, the much busier road ?
