Thanks Dawn and Ray
Dawn - the Camden Register seems a good appoach - though Holborn I think covered maybe a different area - AHHHH I really dont know where to go - though do you know about any Holborn register offices?
Ray, thanks for that information
One of the reasons I need to check this Marriage Certificate is that my Ancester Henry Robert Adams born 1867 and other Children are listed as having been born to a James Adams and Sarah formerly Herbert
It is more than possible that Sarah Herbert had married Thomas Wilton in Lambeth - information that colleagues on line have traced and proved - and when Sarah Wilton - married James Adams -
However, I am loathe to purchase or even if given trust a GRO Certificate - as I've said a previous certicate i purchsed didn't show the church signatures as originally made - which is why i need to see if the WILTON and ADAMS certificate has anywhere on the certificate - HERBERT
Thanks to everyone for your help - the marriage is somewhere in the Holborn area - But where??
Thanks Dawn: Thanks Ray
Steve

Thanks Dawn
Probably try there then - presumably they have all marriage records in the old Holborn district
I may try emailing them - if they can check - at least I have the date- maybe they can pull out the original transcript with original signatures?
Take Care
Steve

Hi Steve
Done a bit more research into the compliation of the GRO marriage index.....
The Anglican parishes were first, entered alphabetically by parish, have a look at the genuki link I posted earlier for a list of the parishes in Holborn.
Next are the Quaker and Jewish records.
I've tried to find a Friends Meeting House in Holborn but the nearest one is in another district. Maybe the Frinds Library can help
http://www.quaker.org.uk/fam?distance%5Baddress_string%5D=london&distance%5Bsearch_distance%5D=100
Can't find an obvious synagogue but that doesn't mean there isn't one.
The next bit is important
Up to the 1898 Marriage Act, which came into force on 1st April 1899, all non-Anglican marriages, except Quaker and Jewish, had to be conducted before a Registrar, so they were recorded in the Registrar's marriage books, kept at the register office and filed by the GRO clerks after the Anglican, Quaker and Jewish marriages in that order.
See page 6 of this document for an idea of other places of worship (this is a list for baptisms though)
http://www.wsfhs.org/AdobeFiles/RA49.pdf
There are possibly 4 Catholic churches in the parish,
St Anselm and St Cæcilia Lincolns Inn Fileds, St Peters Italian Clerkenwell, St Ethedlreda Ely Place and SS peter & Paul Clerkenwell
From 1st April 1899, the non-Anglicans could keep their own registers if they applied to do so and so long as the officiating minister was an "authorised person", i.e. he had a permit. These “authorised person” churches were filed after the Register Office, Quaker and Jewish ones. The GRO clerks simply added them in the order in which they became authorised, rather than by religious denomination or the alphabet. So we are almost sure they weren't married in an Anglican Church, they're not Friends or Jewish so that leaves the rest.
Because the marriage was in 1864 you will have to contact the register office or go the GRO route, both of which means its unlikely you will get a copy of the actual signature.

Hi Dawn
A massive thank you - You are so very very kind to take the time to look
Quite intrigued about the non-religious marriages/ registered in the Registers / towards the GRO - I think you are right and I'll just have to hope the GRO certificate - I just hope it has the information I seek and correct details - at least I'll know the place of the marriage
Earlier note - my Ancesters' marriage in St Bridgets in Leather Lane Holborn - Catholic Church -
However, I think you are right -
The theory is is that Sarah, originally Herbert and according to the Census born in Middlesex St Dunstan's married Thomas Witton and had a daughter Eliza -
However, Thomas died and a Sarah Wilton (same age and with a child Eliza same age as above married James Adams in Holborn 1864
Thomas died or disappeared?
However, as I stated earlier, colleagues on line here definently matched this Sarah Wilton to Sarah Herbert - and James Adams
I am wondering if a single (widowed? ) mother may have been, shall we say shunned by a church (depending on Religion? James took on her daughter and she is known in later census as Eliza Adams but is clearly Eliza Witton Wilton
The Marriage Certificate will answer the problem
Thanks so very again and take care
Steve
