1861 census - Thwaites
« on: Friday 13 May 05 14:56 BST (UK) »

I have lost some of my 'Thwaites' family from the 1861 census,
I cannot find them in the Lancashire 1861 census, so was
wondering if they maybe staying with an Aunt in Helensburgh,
Dumbarton.

James W. Thwaites  age 27 years  born Lancashire
his sister Alice Thwaites age 22 yrs born Lancashire
and one of his brothers Charles Thwaites age 25 years.

Any help much appreciated

Hi Georgie,

A friend in PA saw your post and suggested I get in touch.  I too am tracing Thwaites in Bolton.  I say Thwaites because that is how we spell it but so far I found every variation possible.

Where were your missing James, Charles etc in 1851?

Hello Carol,

So nice to hear from you.   Which Thwaites are you researching and where did they originate from?

In 1851 mine were in Tottington Village, Bury with parents
Thomas and Mary Ann.

My maiden name is Thwaites.   The name first started off as
Thweat in Bolton and as you say from then all sorts of different spellings.

I still have not been able to find my missing Thwaites'

Would be interesting if we are looking for the same families!!!!

Hi Georgie,

My Thwaites - from what I have been able to establish were:

Thomas and Ann/Hannah at Bridgeman Rd. Bolton on the 1851 census.

Children:

Joseph 16
Thomas 13
Richard 11

Plus two older girls Mary and Ann.

I am descended from Thomas who married Mary Thornley from Warrington.

I suspect that the spelling may also have been Thweat when Thomas and Ann/Hannah married.  St. Peter's Bolton records have the baptism of an Ann to Thomas and Hannah which sort of fits the timeframe.

Where in Australia are your Thwaites?  Mine went to Queensland but I now live in South Australia and were are a lot here.

Carol
