Oil Puncher
« on: Thursday 02 February 12 21:59 GMT (UK) »

Hello an ancestor of my wife is listed as an Oil Puncher on his marriage certificate in 1845, in Hoxton, but I can't find it listed anywhere, so does anyone know what this profession was?

Thanks

There were some oil mills in and around London in the mid 1800s assuming Haxton was in London, and these produced oil cake, gels and varnishes etc, I can only suggest he may have worked in this kind of industry and his  job title was oil puncher, perhaps removing solidified oil cake from moulds or similar, We all remember the old western films where there were cow  punchers, perhaps it just means "worker"

Is this is a copy from the GRO. There is no reference anywhere to an "Oil Puncher" the original certificate could be badly written, possibilities are Oil Padder, Oil Presser, Oil Proofer, Oil Purifier.

Maybe it’s something to do with putting oil into containers. Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1797, describes a container called a Puncheon. http://www.rootschat.com/links/0k3o/

“PUNCHEON, is alfo the name of a meafure for liquids. Rum is brought from the colonies in puncheons, which are large cafks containing about 130 gallons.”

Maybe even to do with marking oil containers with a punch or puncheon.

Thanks for all the replies and in no particular order - It definitley looks like Oil Puncher on the London marriages record on Ancestry, but I can't find the job anywhere on the internet.  His family are listed as oil crusher and linseed crusher in other records, so perhaps this is a rarely used archaic term?  The puncheon theory will be worth investigation.  Cow punchers were apparently named after the need to man handle cows eg cowpoke, nothing to do with another term for worker I'm afraid.

Hi Stan,

Apologies for taking so long replying and the marriage was on March 23rd 1845 and was between George Bristow and Sarah Barben in Hoxton St John.
