Grandfather Bryant 1897
|
I have at last found my Grandfather Thomas Bryant (12) in 1891, he is with his brother James (9) at the St Mary's Orphanage, Heston, Isleworth, Brentford, Middlesex. The Orphanage appears to be a Catholic Orphanage.................Can anyone enlighten me on the Orphanage...when it was formed/closed.....where to obtain info on the institution
Thanks in anticipation Bryant

Thanks Sue
That's a good start...
St. Mary's convent, New Brentford, opened 1880 for Poor Servants of Mother of God in two 18th-century houses and gradually extended to cover whole corner of the Butts and the Half Acre. Contained laundry, school c. 1900, orphanage until 1949, and home for mentally retarded girls from 1924. Chapel opened for public worship 1914 and replaced in 1950s.
I might have to buy the book!

Hounslow have a local history society that publishes its own magazine - the Honeslawe Chronicle which might have something in it - the ex borough librarian was big on local history and president of the local history society so the library would probably have something about the orphanage.
