Hi all trying to find the birth details of my g g grandfather THOMAS EDWARDS b ab 1832 Cound,Shropshire. From what I can make out on the 1851 census discs he is living at home with his brother charles, father George and mother Sarah. If I had a copy of his birth certificate would this show me his mothers maiden name? I have the English parish records on disc from about 1540 (fascinating reading) and found a marriage between George Edwards and Sarah rowe in 1808 in Cound Thomas married Ellen Litthales of Berrington approx 1856 but I cant trace any certificate anywhere any help on this would be much appreciated many thanks peter p.s please excuse the typing ,being a plumber I have no need of a keyboard.

The registration of births didn't start until 1837 - so he wouldn't have a birth certificate with his mothers maiden name.
Did he have any siblings born after 1837 ? It is often worth searching for a brother or sisters birth certificate - sometimes you have to go sideways before you can go backwards !

In 1861 - Sarah's age is given as 76 -the ages could be a bit out !!!
1861 at Cound Moor (RG9/1861/34
Sarah EDWARDS 76 Widow Dowager - 1 3/4 acres B: Cound Charles Edwards 35 son Farm Lab "
1861 - at Frodesley - (RG9/1861/67)
Thomas Edwards 33 Head Ag Lab B: Cound Ellen Edwards 26 wife Berrington James Edwards 3 son Frodesley George Edwards 1 son Cound
I can't find a marriage either - but then again - I can't find ANYTHING for the name LITTHALES - are youi sure this the right spelling......
Maybe she had a speech impediment - and her name was Littles !
Also - is there a possibility that they were RC ?
On the LDS website, there is a family baptised at - Acton Burnell - children of George Edwards & Sarah (Still written in the Latin form)
Martha 1809 Joannes 1811 Margerita 1816 Jacobus 1821 Carolus 1824 (Charles) Thomas 1829 Emma 1830
This would fit in with the Sarah Rowe marriage
Have you found George's death certificate ?

So sorry Kathym you were right I have giving you the wrong spelling, it should read LITTLEHALES according to the English parish records disc, the marriage of George Edwards and Sarah Rowe both Cound in 1808 produced a daughter Margret b 1808 (assuming this to be the George and Sarah in the 51 census?) this would make her the older sister of Thomas do you think it is worth my while trying to trace her? being new to this hobby I have never giving it a thought before but now I am starting to realise how archiac our boundry systems are Many thanks for the 61 look up it is the only year I am missing back to 51 Kind regards Pete

Pete
The 1841 census entry could confirm Sarah was Sarah Rowe although no relationships are listed (ages are rounded up or down to the nearest 5 years for adults depending on the enumerator):
HO107/910 Folio 18 Page 5. Cound Moor George EDWARDS, 50, Ag Lab, born Shropshire Sarah EDWARDS, 50, born Shropshire James EDWARDS, 20, Ag Lab, born Shropshire Thomas EDWARDS, 13, Ag Lab, born Shropshire Mary EDWARDS, 20, born Shropshire Margaret ROWE, 80, born Shropshire
Hope that helps.
Best wishes Karen
