COMPLETED WITH THANKS Where did Arthur and Charlotte HOLDER and family go?
« on: Sunday 05 February 12 07:00 GMT (UK) »

I'm hoping someone can help me  Smiley

Arthur Holder b.1868 in Clerkenwell, London, his wife Charlotte Alice (nee Benson) b.1869 in Barnsbury, London and two daughters, Mary b.1895 Highbury, London and Meg b.1897 Putney, London, are living in 94 Upper Richmond Rd, Putney at the time of the 1901 census.

I haven't been able to find anything of any of the family after then.  I've tried deaths and also marriages for the girls, but with no success.

Perhaps I just can't find them in the 1911, or perhaps they have emigrated.  One of Arthur's brothers, Edward emigrated to the US.

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Alison  Grin

EDIT: Mary is perhaps Mary Adelaide (Charlotte's mother's name) and Meg is perhaps Charlotte Margaret.

Meg is most def Charlotte Margaret.... her birth appears on FreeBMD as such.

So therefore that would be her marriage.

Arthur was resident in South Africa according to outbound (from the UK) passenger lists dated 1925 and 1932, aged in each consistent with an 1868 birth.

NB the occupation of this Arthur was "printer" - your Arthur was a trunk dealer in 1901 but a printer compositor in 1891.

I don't think the 1915 marriage can be the right one for "Meg" as she seems to have been single in later records.

SS Usambara arrived Southampton 12 April 1925

[2nd class passengers from Cape Town]

Mr Arthur HOLDER 57 Printer & publisher residing Cape Colony
Miss Charlotte HOLDER 28 No occupation residing Cape Colony

Their UK contact address was c/o Mrs BENSON, "Shriley", 3 Wolverton Ave, Kingston-on-Thames.

Added: various other passenger lists for members of the family in the 1920s give Stamford House, Roehampton as their UK address.

That's my girl - that's the 1911 address of her Uncle Edward.  Grin

And yet again the right people - Arthur's wife's maiden name was Benson.

Fabulous work everyone,

Hi

Possible marriage of Mary Adelaide

Mary A Holder
Jack H Bligh
September quarter 1929
Kingston registration district Surrey
Volume 2a
Page 1579

There was an actor born in Ramsgate in 1890 called Jack Hodges Bligh (died 1967). His first wife Henrietta divorced him in 1922. The Times in 1930 lists the cast for the Stratford-on-Avon festival. It includes Mr Jack Bligh and Miss Mary Holder (she would be keeping her original name, her stage name if the 1929 marriage was correct).

Births Mar 1895
Holder Mary Adelaide Islington 1b 423

Mary Adelaide Bligh
Born 22nd January 1895
Death registered September quarter 1980
Aged 85
Hillingdon registration district
Volume 13
Page 0679

Mary Bligh actress aged 36 travelled from Durban to Southampton in 1931 and again in 1947 when aged 52, from Cape Town to London. She gave her occupation as housewife and the address 3 Wolverton Avenure Kingston-upon-Thames. She travelled again in 1952 when aged 56 with Jack aged 61 from Cape Town to London.
