One of my favourite Museums, and Liverpool has plenty  Grin

"The Merseyside Maritime Museum tells the history of one of the world's greatest ports and the people who used it. For many it was a gateway to a new life in other countries. For others, its importance to the slave trade had less happy consequences. From slavers to luxury liners, submarine hunters to passenger ferries, discover Liverpool's central role in centuries at sea."

I see this was posted some time ago but thought I'd add something anyway.
The museum archives have all sorts of useful ifnormation for those with seafaring ancestors.

I found a relative at the Liverpool Seaman's Orphanage on 1881 census.  I couldn't be certain at the time that it was a relative.  A chance comment to someone brought  the info that the Orphanage papers are in the maritime museum but you do have to get permission from the Orphan's insitution to view them.

Fantastic stuff - the information there confirmed it was my grandfather's sister. My gt grandfather a seaman, died at 33 leaving his widow with 4 young children and no financial support.

The application form for admission of the eldest child to the orphanage, in March 1880, indicates that her mother "intends to take in washing".  It also tells me that my gt aunt was vaccinated against (or had had) smallpox, that she did not have fits and that she was free from "troublesome habits in the night"

Great sites Pam and Mary,

I only live up the road from the Maritime Museum, and I have only been twice.  Embarrassed

I must go and have another look.
