Hi All, I use 1837online for their BMD pages which are very, very useful. I probably only use a small proportion of the £5 that I have to pay, but has been good. As far as census transcriptions go, I am far from happy with Ancestry.com and I have heard the same said about 1837online. The 1871 and 1861 transcriptions are rubbish. I mean, they are really BAD! I have spent the last few days on a new line of search, and have discovered complete families transcribed under a family on the same page with a different name. The only way is to either search through the entire page of a census, which I can often do anyway as I have many of the census; or use a first name and date of birth, then it may give some results. This defeats the idea of a proper search engine. I have to admit, my 1841 transcriptions are not perfect, but then I am a one man band, who does not charge. For instance, there is the complete Saffron Walden, except about 30 records, and Romford and Epping are only one census rather than complete; but for the fee paying sites, I am not impressed at all. So, it is up to you if you feel you want to take a chance in the data being correct for your pennies. Later census are fairly good, the early ones are RUBBISH! Summary, Ancestry.com are OK, but need to use proper transcribers to do their work, if they intend keeping their customers. 1837online is probably the same. What choice do we have as customers? Best Kevan

These are some of the Essex 1841 census that you will find in the search engine:
Writtle , Romford , Hornchurch , Cranham , Childerditch , Hornchurch Great War, Terling , Doddinghurst , Navestock , South Weald , Stondon Massey , Blackmore Bobbingworth , Stanford Rivers , Warley , Kelvedon Hatch Christening, Fryerning , Stebbing , Great Baddow , Clavering , Bardfield , Saffron Walden , Aldham , Roxwell , Great Tey & Little Tey , Essex Marriages (abt 21,000) , Epping , Farnham , North Weald , Shenfield.
My free site - these are some that are available. Plus various Essex, and maybe more since this list was produced. Link is either http://essex1841.com/ or http://censusology.net - the choice is yours.
Plus search engine, plus a link to the complete Essex Pubs site; plus loads more too. Plus I do free research for charitable donations.

Hi Kevan, I noticed you have paid for 1837 on-line, would I be asking too much for you to look up a birth for me. I do not have a credit card and live in Aust. The person I am looking for is James Collins, born c 1841 Sussex, father James. That is all the info I have on him. Thanks...Rob

Hi Rob,
Have you tried looking on freeBMD (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com) for your James Collins? a search for James Collins's born sussex between 1839-1842 gave: Births Mar 1841 COLLINS James Cranbrook 5 77 Births Sep 1842 COLLINS James Brapple Brighton 7 255 Births Dec 1842 COLLINS James Rye 7 398
You won't be able to find if any of them had a father called James without ordering the certs though I'm afraid. Have you found him in any censuses that might tell you which part of Sussex he was from?
Best regards,
Emily

According to the IGI (http://www.familysearch.org/) the James Brapple Collins had father James ad mother Jane and was christened Oct 1842 St Nicholas, Brighton.....maybe the middle name Brapple has some family connection for you?

Hi Emily, Thank you for helping...I know James Brapple Collins is not the one, as that one died in Eng....My James came to Aust. by 1863, that's when he married here. There were too many on the shipping index with the same name and age to pick which one was mine. On his children's births it just said Sussex. His 1st daughter was Emma and 1st son James..then Horace John..Harriet Sopia, William I have asked for a look up in Sussex census, but I need the place. Cheers..Rob

Hi Kevan, I wonder if you can advise me on how to go about finding the details of my G/Grandmother Eleanor HOMAN. I have her wedding certificate, on it it states her father as being
CLEMENT ARNOLD. But her name was HOMAN. On all the census she states she was born in GRAYS ESSEX Her age was stated at her marriage as 23. in1852 making her birth about 1829 She married a James Nathaniel Stubberfield at MILTON,KENT.
I have checked1861, 1871 census for a Clement Arnold but with no luck, Also cannot find anything for her before her marriage, I have checked 1841, census but with no luck. Any advise would be appreciated.Than You Yonder
