Hi

My father is George Hailstone, his father was also George.  I think his grandfather was called William.  My father's mother was called Minnie Johnson.  The story I've heard about our ancestors is that the Hailstone's were originally Halston and came from Iceland, the Johnsons were Johanson and came from Norway.  I don't remember a Smith connection though.

Hailstone isn't a common name and I wondered if there was a link here with what you're looking for?

I'll keep watching to see what you make of this   Smiley

Hi,

No such story in my family. I think that my Hailstones probably come from Warwickshire, although there are other pockets of Hailstones around the country - Wiltshire, for example.

Do you have any dates and birthplaces for your Hailstones to see if we can connect anywhere? As you say, it's not a common name.

My  Hailstones were connected to John and Sophia of Maxstoke. I also have some info on John Hailstones' background.

Did your George move to Malvern?

Dear Linda,

Sorry for slow reply - I've been on holiday. George did not move to Malvern, but I believe that John, Sophia and their son William did, although the census returns are a little confused.

George Hailstone moved to Reading for a while where he seems to have had relatives - pehaps an uncle or cousin. While there he married Mary Jane Knight and they then moved up to Liverpool and had three children, one of whom was my grandmother.

Any more info re this branch would be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Sue

Hello Sue
Looking through my old notes, which I haven't looked at for ages, it looks as though your George belonged to John and Sophia, who, in 1851 were running an Inn in Maxstoke/Meriden,(was it the Three Horseshoes?) and Johns' mother Ann was living with them at that time. John belonged to John and Ann Hailstone, who ran the Fox and Goose in Stechford, until John died in 1844. They also had a blacksmiths shop in Saltley in Aston. I have more info on this family, but am wondering if it is best if you e mail me directly on linda@zaffardi.fsnet.co.uk
My connection is with John of the Fox and Goose's brother Thomas....

Regards

Linda
