It is hard to find out about the Welsh builders in Liverpool. There are many houses built by the Welsh, but sadly the ones in Toxteth are under demolition, they could even been gone by now, been a while since I was up that way. Another problem you will face is the name William Owen....my grandfather is William Owen and the job we have in tracing him. I am not sure how you will go about tracing him, the only ones that have really been mentioned are a family of builders, called Owen and William Owen Elias, they were father and son, built streets in Walton that spelt out the name of their firm in alphabetical order. Between County Road and Goodison Road. I can't find anything relating to William Owen, just that in the mid to late 19th century, there were a number of Welsh building societies, estate agents and builders in Liverpool. One famous builder was John Jones, nicknamed Drinkwater, because of his refusal to pay workmen the customary price of a pint of beer when the first house in a terrace was completed. Another was William Jones the first Welsh-speaking mayor of Bootle who built streets in Everton and Toxteth. Not much am afraid, but that is all I have, it may come in handy for someone else.

Hi
Not sure if I am on the right track here but visited Llangwyllog Church today and there is a large gravestone at the rear of the cemetary which I believe is a wealthy gentleman who was a liverpool house builder.
I will visit again tomorrow and see what his name is - hopefully it is the one you are seeking.
Kind regards Carole

Hi,
There was a book published in 1946 called The Welsh Builder on Merseyside - Annals and lives, it is no longer available to purchase, but there are a few copies in reference libraries, I know there is one at Liverpool Records Office, I have read a lot of the pages of the book (viewable only at the library) and is not for loan. In many cases it lists the names and birth places of many of the Welsh Builders, where they were born and in some cases when they died. I found the book a valuable source, I was able to locate a lot of the builders through census records, with the help of the book.
I was researching the history of my house, and I couldn't find any records of it locally, I asked a neighbour who had the deeds to his house (Bootle) and he gave me the names of the builders, they were brothers, so I looked in that book and found them listed, it gave their years and places of birth, it was amazing, I found them living in Bootle on the census records.

Hi,
I know this is an old post, but I have recently been able to purchase the book I have mentioned, The Welsh Builder on Merseyside - Annals and lives.
There are 4 William Owen listed in it, one has no year of birth etc, but built in various places in Liverpool including Beresford Road and Cockspur Street in the Dingle (Toxteth). he came from Llansadwrn Anglesey, about 1846.
Another William Owen, Deane Road 1842-1915 native of Bontnewydd Caernarvon, came to Liverpool in 1865, built in Edge Lane District.
Another Manor Road Great Crosby, built Waterloo area.
And another with a very long write-up. Seaforth and Anglesey 1862-1931 Native of Burwen Anglesey came to Liverpool when he was 20.
This one lists various streets within the Liverpool and Crosby areas.
Hope that helps a bit.
