Advice please - pre 1800 birth
« on: Thursday 19 May 05 12:45 BST (UK) »

Hi,

I'm stuck with tracing Thomas Herbert's birth c. 1775.

According to his marriage entry he was a mariner from Seaford, Sussex age 24+ but it doesn't mention who his father was.

I have searched the IGI Batch Nos for Seaford and the only people I can find are his own children.

It seems he was the first Herbert to be from Seaford.  Also, searching the whole of Sussex produced only a small amount of people called Thomas Herbert (and he wasn't one of them!)

Would anyone have any suggestions on ways to try and trace his birth.  Or should I give up on this one!

Thanks

I've looked on  Ancestry, Family search and Pallots baptisms and can't find it. Don't ever give up! Have the bastardy orders been searched? He may be illegitimate. Have you asked for a look up in Essex? Just because it's not been transcribed on to an internet site doesn't mean the answer isn't there. I can't help further because I am in  Nottingham not Essex but some nice person on Rootschat will help eventually. Don't give up. Has he got siblings, can you search on them instead? It may not be the obvious that gives you the answer. Try and see the bigger picture and think laterally. I sympathise because I am stuck in Dublin in 1900.

Hi Jane,

Thanks for looking.  I tried looking for siblings as well but none turned up in the area.  My guess is because he was a Mariner he probably didn't orginally come from Sussex.  The only clue we have is some silver with the Herbert family crest on it which has been passed down through the family.

I think my next step is to start searching merchant navy/royal navy records for that time.  Who knows I might get lucky!!

Thanks again for looking
