Hi, Does anyone live near/ know Lickey End near Bromsgrove? A branch of my family lived there for generations until my grandad died in 1980. My g.g. grandfather's father was William Commanders & his mother Emily Palmer. I'm not sure what name he was given at birth but when he got married he took the name Palmer. I also think he was born BEFORE William & Emily got married. William was only 17 when they got married whilst Emily was a couple of years older. I am assuming that William was the father as he was so young but as Emily's profession was char lady/ housekeeper in later censuses I wanted to check if anyone knew of any large houses in the area that might have had a frisky young 'lord of the manor'. OK I confess just want to confirm that I really am from lowly waiting staff rather from some grand family where there are family millions waiting to be claimed by the next in line (actually that would be my dad, but surely he would throw some my way?!)! If anyone knows the area I would be really interested to hear from you. Thanks Nicolette

Nicolette,
I'm afraid the area is littered with the odd estate, from the Earl of Plymouth's Lickey Grange, now an open prison, to more modest houses with only several acres of land.
From the 1851 census: there was a George COMMANDER, age 10 in Burcutt (sic), now Burcot. He was born in Lapworth WAR, and was an Ag Lab, living with his father-in-law, John PEASE? of Hampton, WAR,and wife Sarah, 27 also from Lapworth.
Burcot is only about a mile away from Lickey End.
STOP PRESS Just noticed, two households along from John PEASE?, in 1851, was Thomas PALMER, 48 year old farmer of 22 acres.
Your on your own from now on.
Mike

Dear Mike, This is really interesting many thanks. Especially as I have managed to track down William in Staple Hill (which I think is nearby?) living with his grandparents Richard & Martha PEARCEY! . In the 1861 census he actually lives 2 doors down from Emily which is obviously how they met! How romantic!! Many thanks for your help. I think that I will probably take a trip to the area fairly soon to visit the land of my forefathers & go to the records office. Can you tell me if there is a records office in Bromsgrove? Many thnaks again. Nicolette

Nicolette,
The plot thickens... All in the 1851 transcription:
William PEARCY, 24, son-in-law to Joseph BIRD, near Staple Hill Rebekah PERCY, 71, of Linthurst Joseph PERCEY, 27, of Apesdale
These are all within a mile or two of Lickey End, and would need to be positively excluded from the family.
Try Bromsgrove Museum - whilst it still exists - funding crisis. Bromsgrove library, Stratford Road, good book collection, but little in the way of records. Worcester Family History Centre - combined county record office and LDS Family History Centre. St. John's or St. Andrew's are likely to be the main Churches, depending on the date. However, there were a number of Methodist Chapels around, so check the records carefully.
For marriages the BMSGH Marriage Index, searchable by bride or groom is the best finding aid, 1700-1837. Copy help at Worcester and NOT on-line. Or contact BMSGH online, small fee payable.
New thought. If they were at Burcot, then St. Bartholomew, in the parish of Tardebigge is closer, but not their parish!
If BIRD is a family relative name, then there is one photo in The HUGHES Collection - photos taken 1895-1908.
Mike.

Nicollete,
More info. From the HUGHES Collection exhibit at Avoncroft Museum, this weekend.
If I remember correctly a Charlotte PEARCEY, was murdered, aound Lickey End. Info in the press and a book - ? A Carpenter's Tale. Around 1905 I think.

Dear Nicolette
Mike from Bromsgrove suggested that I contact you. I am a desendant of The Pearcey's. I am currently writing a book about the murder of Charlotte Pearcey at Lickey End
I have got the Pearcey line right back over many generations. I do not live at Bromsgrove but am making many contacts via the book research. I am willing to share what I have
Best wishes Yvonne
