I am defeated
« on: Thursday 19 May 05 18:01 BST (UK) »

I have been going through my Records and floppy disks's.I have discovered i don't have copies of important Letters sent to me 4 years ago. Some from the Admiralty and records from Chatham Dockyard, On my computer or disk. I think i have found out why,I scanned one page with Canocraft.Saved it my documents, i wanted it in My word documents so i can copyand paste it into my tree. it will only open as an image file and it wont C&P.If i try to open it as a word document it  just comes out in square's. I need to email these documents. How do i do it please Huh

Celia
I have an idea i have a program missing I am sure i could do this before

emailing them is relatively easy celia .... just email the images themselves as the attachment.

different email programs handle it slightly differently but if you check the menu bar usually under attach or tools you should see the option to insert or attach a file to your email

Insert puts your image into the email itself and attach as its name implies attaches the file in the format you have it to the email

Hi Falkyrn
I don't have a problem sending images as i do it most days(sorry i forgot to put the brackets in Roll Eyes )My problem is transfaring the letter/image onto another another page.Of course i could type it all out as a document, but then it would not have the signatures or the Navy Emblem on it. All i can do at the moment is save my document and print them but i cant move them.

Well i will try. My family tree is all printed out, cant use those gedcom things. As well as printing i also copied and pasted into my tree. From the 1881 census my variouse family's children. No problem there, but i cant do that with the image because they wont copy. Let me do a test. Pretend this is part of my family tree.

Update 19th May 2005

Have now found granddads letter from the Admiralty at last

Option 1 if using a  family tree program and it supports and allows iimages .. (many do) you could incorporate or import the image into the persons record

Option 2 Print out image and rescan using your scanners OCR (optical Character Recognition) part of the software which will convert it to something that MsWord will recognise ..... the drawback there is the crest which will remain an image.

Option 3 you say that your tree is printed out and as you refer to cutting and pasting I'm presuming that you are using a computer program to do it.If this is the case you should be able to insert the image into the text  In MSWord this is done from the menu bar
Insert - Picture - From File

Ive had this same problem with some images.  I ended up C & P onto a powerpoint slide and then C&P'ing from there.  You can, from the ppt slide save the image as a jpeg - left click on the image, 'save picture as' and save to My Documents that way.

Not sure if this solves your problem, but its an idea.

When i C&P i just  left click on my mouse, highlight the letter or whatever. Then right click and press copy, then drop it where i need it. I cant understand why it wont work.I can add a photo to a document but not this letter.Do you think the gremlins have been partying in my computer and knocked the setting over Grin

Microsoft Powerpoint slide, abbreviated to 'ppt' when you save it. Sorry, I use it so much I forget...

I had no problem cutting and pasting to word but photo editor opened in the background.
How many of these letters have you got and is this what you want to do?
I can't attach the word documet to show you because Rootschat won't let me attach a word document only an image file. If you want to send me a personal message with your email address I will email it to you.

OCR = Optical Character recognition ..... basically another program which is used bu your scanner to convert a document that contains text back into text rather than into an image.

Your method should work .... perhaps the gremlins have been in.

Try an alternative method  in the document you are trying to place the image ...this should work if you are using Word as your text program

step 1 position the cursor where you want the image to go
step 2 click on  "insert" and move down the menu that presents itself
select picture and then "from file" which should bring up a menu of your drives find your image and click on it and then select insert

Hi Everyone
I have now sorted the problem, before i saw the above post Grin
I realized what i have been doing, for some reason after scanning i have been using Save as.Instead if the usual Save.
Save as,saves it as a picture so it will only open in a picture/photo preview.Save makes it a Lossy file and it goes to my documents. So I had saved a letter as a picture thats why i couldn't copy or move it.I had the  "picture " in another file so i altered it a bit to make it a new file. Then saved it.I was then able to add the picture. Now i must remember not to "save as" Again Grin
