Can anybody tell me what the earliest directory was i.e Pigots etc., for Beds.

I have 1823. Need to check back round about 1810 and slightly earlier.

I think you may have the earliest there.. there are earlier one's in other parts of the country [1780s etc]. I think that is the earliest they have in Bedford archives but you could e mail them and ask?

Try the Beds Archives search site [there is about a quarter of its holdings listed so far].

I forgot to say, please try the National Archives too...go to 'search our archives' and select 'PROCAT'... Although, there may be something on A2A too? I only use PROCAT to look up old Military history but there is a lot of other stuff there too and companies & businesses etc.

If the business was fairly big, it seems likely there may be comething at Kew? Anyway, have a look as sometimes these sites turn up a real gem Wink

I have used these sites before and you are right they are brilliant. Beds has to have one of the best online resources.

The business I'm after is a mill so I have no idea how big/small it was.

Think I shall have to try and find it on 1841 census and work back from there.

I can spend hours on the Blars site. Only unfortunate thing the family name is Green

Have to say with help from several people on this site I am finally getting somewhere with this family.

The business was a Mill?

All Mills were listed on the 1803 National Defence Muster [the government wanted to know who was milling flour/baking bread/ ready to defend should France invade us ...they even listed how many horses and carts/waggons people had]...

...the trouble is not all 1803 Muster lists survived but those in North Bedfordshire did [Barford/Stodden/Willey hundreds] . If it was in that area there may be a record of it. Let me know as I have a book with the lists in and can give you details.

Ps all men between 17 & 55 are listed in 1803 but only in those areas - the other lists seem to be lost now for ever Embarrassed

John Green the owner prior to his death in 1810 lived in Shefford.

No it isnt Embarrassed

. That is what I'd call mid-Bedfordshire although it is to the east almost Hertfordshire [still south of Bedford]. http://uk.multimap.com/

However, have you checked out whether there were earlier Wills for that family? The archivist would let you know if you e mail her. Dont give up hope...as I expect you will find out who originally purchased the Mill & while your e mailing ask if there is anything on the Mill's history too?

You may like to join Bedfordshire rootsweb mailing list as there are a few historians on there who are helpful.

Hi Cathy

Thanks for looking for me.

I do belong to the Beds list and have been putting a few enquiries on over the past few weeks, namely trying to pin down my William Green, John's grandson, in 1851.

At that point he was around 16 and I am fairly certain orphaned. Two of his siblings were living with his mothers relations on poor relief.

In 1861 he was married in London, a master baker. Which is leading me to believe he may have been in the family business in '51.

I'm chipping away at that brickwall, very slowly but it's definately going.

The archivist has helped me before and I recently bought the Shefford records.

If I e mail and ask them to give me dates of any earlier wills etc., would they charge me do you think.
