I have recently - yesterday- found that one of my ancestors worked at the prison.
I have him on the 1871/81/91 census when he had retired back to Cambridgeshire - he gave his occupation as retired gate porter in 1871. Pensioner from Hall Prison in 1881 and retired prison officer in 1891 - promtion in retiremant!
What I would like to know is where he may have lived whilst working at the prison and if the 1861 census is available for that area.
He was Henry King b 1820 Whittlesey Cambs and his wife was called Ann. I would love to know if they had any children.
l use to live in Bedford, past the prison every morning on the way to work.
Just type in your browser Bedford and anything else. it will bring up sites that you can pick from. l think the library there has some info online. Hope this helps.
