there is also a partial name index for the 1851 Cumberland online at:
http://homepages.tesco.net/~rolygrigg/ or google "rolygrigg". Can't see a Jane in Alston though - although it is possible that not all folios are available via this site.

I noticed your post when about to request an 1851 lookup for Carlisle. I may have found my person on your second link viz (HO107/2429 Folios 455 - 554) Carslisle part 7
I am looking for a David Scott (aged about 6 weeks). There was one born in Carlisle at this time & the above reference lists the names of his parents (John and Eliza) among the many Scott names.
Do you know where I may find access to the detail of these entries? (From Australia)
best bet is still to post on here asking for a lookup for David John & Eliza - someone may have the full transcript and occasionally you find that a couple of kind Carlisle folks may look for you on a visit to the Record Office. My be worth trying both 1851 and 1861 depending on what information you are after?
If that doesn't yield any results I'm afraid I don't know of anyone else doing 1851 Lookups for Carlisle Part 7 so you have a couple of choices - you can buy the transcript from Cumbria family History Society via their website http://www.cumbriafhs.com/ - they will airmail to Australia for £7.15 GBP or send via seamail for £5.95 GBP.
The other option is to see if the Carlisle Record Office are able to do a specific copy of the census for you. I know they used to do this for a small fee if you are able to provide the folio reference. They can be contacted via their webpages at http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/contact/default.asp.
I'm afraid I'm not sure if they still offer this service though given the increase in enquiries - they do a more generic research service at a hefty £24 per hour fee but this is aimed more at those who have no idea where to look! Last time I asked one of the Cumbrian record offices to find a parish record for me it cost £3.50 GBP inc postage in the UK so it may be worth shelling out for the whole transcript via CFHS if you have other relatives in the area.

The family arrived in Australia in 1852 (so should not exist on 61 - which may be a way to eliminate them as mine!). They originally came from Scotland, but I can find no details of the childrens births there - other family ended up in Liverpool before migrating so I began searching and found this as a possiblity. I'll post a request & if not found will follow through with your other options.
