Looking for any details on the family of Captain John Culverhouse RN who served with Nelson and was taken prisoner with Hardy(later the pair were exchanged for a Spanish prisoner at Gibralter). Although John was born in Meare,Somerset circa 1760 he must have strong connections with Northam,Devon. His mother was buried Northam 18/8/1803 and the inscription on her grave has Mrs Elizabeth Adams mother of Captain John Culverhouse RN,passed away age 70. John married Margaret Hogg Benson in Northam 3/9/1789 and there is a record of a baptism for a Benson Culverhouse in Northam 15/11/1806. The Royal Navy List has John drowned 1809 whereabouts unknown.Any information on John, his mother, wife or son would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Pete

Mainly researching the Lees from Herts but also compiling a one name study of Culverhouse
Hi Jane, thanks for that mass off links,I already have the full service history of John but those links will come in very handy for anyone else with Naval ancestors. It is mainly John's place of death and what happened to his wife and child that I am mainly looking for,so far a total brickwall with no record of death for Benson or his mother. Thanks yet again,Pete

Will of John Culverhouse, Captain in the Royal Navy of Northam , Devon 30 October 1811 PROB 11/1526
Is this the same man? Prerogative Court of Canterbury will - you can order online from the National Archives. If it is the same man you can follow through the beneficiaries of the will in the estate duty records IR 27 and IR 26 (one is an index for the other).
