Hi,
I guess they could be in a nearby village. I didn't look further than Dunton, as I don't have an index to help with that kind of search.

Thanks Sue. Elizabeth is consistently given as born in Dunton on 1861/71/81 census whereas Joseph Henry Waller seemed to make it up as he went along! - Essex/Roxwell/Bowe. My aged aunt remembers a romantic tale of Elizabeth living in a "big house" where Joseph worked possibly as a groom. They eloped and sailed to Hartlepool to live. How much is true and how much legend is open to question. If you come up with any idea of how I might progress I would be very grateful. I think Great-great grandpa Joseph covered their tracks and I may have gone as far as I can. Thanks for taking the time to look for me. Kath.

Hi Kath There are 7 Elizabeth Cooks of right age in Essex. Only one living in a house with servants - in Manningtree. Others are in Weatherfield, Halstead, Boreham, Ardleigh. Boreham and Little Bromley. Happy to post details. Also had a look for Joseph Waller - there is a 3 yr old and a 5 year old both in Dagenham. Other than that only a 45 and 75 yr old. Again can post details. Let me know. Regards Jan

Hi, Jan. Please do post details if you can. Joseph was born c1828 - according to census data - so would have been 13 in 1841 - elusive character! The Elizabeth in Manningtree could be a possibility - trying to remember where Manningtree is. Looking forward to seeing details. Thanks for your help. Kath.

Thanks Jan. That will be great. Looked at the map so I know where Manningtree is!! Quite feasible they hopped on a boat and sailed up the coast - think I'm romancing more than my aunt. Kath

1841 Manningtree James Cook 44 Butcher Elizabeth Cook 35 William 13 Elizabeth 10 Sarah 8 Louisa 6 George 5 John 3 Benjamin 2 Mary Ann 8 mnths James Lambert 20 MS Emma Eteen 15 FS William Palmer 50 Lodger (crossed out) All born in county The last 3 are living in same house but listed as separate household HO107-0338 ED1 Folio9 Pg12 and 13
There is a Joseph Waller 25 Butcher in St Mary Stoke Ipswich which isn't far from Manningtree, but maybe too old for yours? Let me know if you find out anything more about this romantic boat trip . Wasn't sure if you wanted other Elizabeths, let me know. Regards Jan

Thanks for that Jan. Something else for me to puzzle over! Would you mind posting details of the other Elizabeth's? thanks. That Joseph Waller would be too old - he seemed to stick with a birth year of1828ish. In 1861 he was a docker - the marine link continued! - from Bowe - living in Hartlepool with 2 children. He would have loved the Marina now but I think a boat trip up the East coast in a little boat in 1840something would have been far from romantic. I will keep you posted if I find anything to back up the legend! Kath

and this family Dead Lane, Ardleigh Jacob Waller 30 Ag Lab Sarah Waller 25 HENRY 6 Could Joseph Henry have lied about his age to marry under 21 without parents permission and then stuck with the false age perhaps Ardleigh is not far from Manningtree and thus near the coast. I'd like it if someone could find them both in 1851 working at one of the nearby Halls before setting off on their rough journey up the coast Sarah 4 Mary 1 HO107-0338 ED3 Folio40 Pg13
Hukers Farm, Little Bromley William Cook 40 Ag Lab Sarah Cook 40 Bartholmew 15 William 12 Ester 10 Elizabeth 8 Ann 2 Bartholmew Cook 75 Ag Lab HO107-0338 ED10 Folio5 Pg5
No more Joseph or Henry Wallers in areas near the Elizabeths, or anywhere else for that matter.

Thanks, Jan. The Ardleigh connection looks promising - or am I just praying it is? I am sure J.H. had no qualms about lying and covering his tracks. The ag.lab. Wallers could suggest they worked for a landowner and J.H. may have become a groom at the same place. I will persevere! Thanks so much for your help. I'll keep you posted if anything turns up. Kath
