Hi Jo,
As I have said somewhere before - Second Site is brilliant for getting your tree on the net - but doesn't want you to alter any of it's pages!!
When you add pages onto them it will only let you use standard text - so I then go thro Front Page and have to edit them - it's a pity really because it does the family history part so well - and I like to keep the background all the same - so have to use Second Site - and then Front Page all the time.
You CAN DO IT - it's just a fiddle - it's not you it's the SOFTWARE - it's their fault they don't work together - not YOURS - that's what I have realised at any rate!!
Nearly there
Cheers
Keith

Thank you all so much for your support I couldn't have carried on without it. So many of your suggestions helped but I was still struggling. So I then discovered I could edit text in Second Site in HTML. Never used it before.....but it was only a paragraph of text so borrowed a manual and with a bit of trial and error it worked!!!!! I then got really over confident and added a photograph. Its too big but I'm not brave enough to edit it at the moment. Went back to Second Site to edit text some more but all my HTML had vanished! Only problem is I have the beginnings of my index page but none of the links work now!! All the folders seem to have the correct files in them and I didn't touch any HTML except the text on the index page. Anyway that's a problem for later in the week as in spite of being ancient I have to work tomorrow...they must be desperate Thank you all again for giving me so much help and support what would we do without this site! Keith which version of Front Page do you use? Jo

Hi Jo,
Not sure which version of Front Page - as I am not at my own PC at the moment - think it would be probably be in the Microsoft 2000 edition - but will check at the end of the week.
Less of this "Age" thing None of us is getting any younger!!
Someone told me (think it was Berlin Bob) that I should learn something new every day - doing my family history and its website I think that should every minute!!
Get photos on site and then someone suggests I use "thumbnails" - get those and and someone ............... never mind - it does keep my little brain active - and I thought I worked hard BEFORE I retired!!
Keep at it - and keep blaming the software - it probably is that - it's not you.
Cheers
Keith

Thanks. The picture is great. A distant cousin in Canada supplied it, sadly I can only guess at which family member is which but I think it is a fascinating glimpse of an Edwardian wedding. Jo

Thanks Trystan, Couldn't have done it without all the support from you and those endlessly patient Rootschat members especially Keith and Berlin Bob!!!! It seemed to help a lot when I circumnavigated Front Page (2003) and learned some very basic HTML which I used with Second Site. Now I feel I can do some editing and try to produce a more user friendly site Jo

Well Done Jo,
See nothing to it - easy this websire business!!
Now off you go to answer some "Newbie" question about getting Websites up and running!!
It is satisfying when it all finally comes together.
Great photo - you just need to alter it a bit to get the brightness out of part of the picture - now - if you go to "photo restoration" - deadants will help you with that!!!
And you thought you were nearly there!!
Everytime I think I have mastered one part - someone thinks up something else to learn!!
Keep up the Great Work.
Cheers
Keith

Thanks Keith Couldn't have done it without all the encourgement and support I've had I will have a go at the photograph. I think after all my failed attempts I may have put in the wrong copy anyway!! I now need to do some editing and try to make it into something that looks more like a website! By the way I inherited Frontpage 2003 and it keeps telling me it doesn't like servers which don't have Frontpage extensions and several aspects won't upload without them. Typical Microsoft!!!!!! So I'm trying to manage without using it!! Very steep learning curve doing basic HTML in Second Site. Enjoying it though!! When I'll be brave enough to launch my website for public consumption is another matter!!!!!!! Jo

Hi Jo
You did ask before about my version of Front Page (when I was at my brothers).
It is the 2000 edition version 4 - what I do is upload my second site page into Front Page - edit it there - add photos etc - and then alter the name back to the second site name and upload to my site - longwinded - but saves me learning too much about HTML (hope Bobs not reading this!!)
Doesn't matter how you do it - as long as you get there!!
Must dash now as my ancestry lookup runs out in a few hours!!
Cheers
Keith

When I'll be brave enough to launch my website for public consumption is another matter!!!!!!! No time like the present !! At least add it to your profile, so we can "pop in and see"
I started off using Frontape at work at got so p***ed off with it that I ended up doing straight HTML. Yes, it's a big learning curve, but I feel I have more control over what goes where, and how, and now I do what I want and NOT what some Microsoft programmer thinks I want !
A tip for your next forays into web programming:
Make the wedding image smaller, so it loads faster (important for non-broadband users) and use the smaller photo as a link to the large photo see also "Tip: Adding images (and 'thumbnails') to web-sites" http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,47486.0.html
As Keith says, soon you'll be helping others with their sites ...
Keep on Webbing !! Bob

After going through her various web-site postings, the thought struck me, that if I merge them together, into one topic, they would make a great story, so after talking to Jocie, I did !
Seeing them altogether, as on thread, it really shows the whole process, from the initial How on earth do I do this, through all the intermediate stages, to the final At last !!!!!!!
Above all it shows Jocies's determination to try, her determination to succeed, and her "I'll keep trying till I've got it right" attitude
I think it is a great story, and it will be a big encouragement to others, to "have a go !"
She's already thinking about what to add next and how to improve her site, because, as Keith Bateman so succinctly put it:
Everytime I think I have mastered one part - someone thinks up something else to learn!!
Congratulations, Jocie, and Long may you (and all of us) keep learning !!

Thanks Bob I just hope my struggles will encourage others. It is worth it, it's hard work, frustrating, and a steep learning curve. But...it is also fun, very satisfying and the bonus is you get to make a lot of very supportive friends on Rootschat!!! Jo
