No, sorry, Jane, during WW1 he enlisted for Home Defence in Canada, when he absconded from his adoptive family.  Thanks for the link, though.  Jacky

Hi there

If you want to post his name and particulars I can dig around here in Canada and see what can be found. I think home defence is also known as the reserves.

Here are some clips that might be of interest

http://home.thezone.net/~ainal/for_king_and_country.htm
Quote
HMS Briton's reservists were tasked with a number of home-front defence duties. They provided an armed piquet for the Admiralty's wireless station at nearby Mount Pearl, a site Stanley Hillier visited several times in mid 1916 (but not in the capacity of Guard). Reservists also manned the harbour's main defence battery at Fort Waldegrave. Abandoned in 1870, the Fort was reactivated in June-July 1916 and manned by members of the Newfoundland Legion of Frontiersmen. The RNR maintained a 12-pounder gun there to protect the harbour entrance

Thelma, that's a really generous offer, many thanks.
He was:  William Haden, born c 1903.  Arrived in Halifax, NS 1909.  Stayed with a family called Matheson/Mattheson , Batestone, Cape Breton.  Apparently he absconded in late summer of 1914 to enlist for Home Defence.
Don't know much more than that, other than that he survived the first world war.  I've checked the War graves site, and veterans archives, but can't find anything there. Thanks again, you're a star Kiss

Thanks for that, Karen - I managed to get the attestation papers for his older brother a while back, but William wasn't old enough, and joined the Home defence at age 14.  I'll keep trying   ;o0  Jacky

Thelma, this is so kind of you, thank you.
Yes, the Boys you identified are the right ones - I have Ernests attestation papers, and grave details.  I believe that William's name was transcribed incorrectly - have got his Middlemore records, too.
I'm quite excited about the Divorce records page - that's a real possibility.  sadly, the link won't open for me at the moment, but I'll try again later.
don't know if William had another name - his father abandoned mother around the time of his birth, and I haven't yet tracked down his birth certificate.
Thank you again, I really appreciate your efforts  Kiss

Hello

you may already have this but I think I found his WW1 attestation papers under the name of William Matheson (Hayden), sister Miss. Eliza Hayden of Liverpool is next of kin, he was born Dec 25 1901 in Wolverhampton, England. He enlisted June 29 1918 and lists Louisburg, Nova Scotia as his address.  He lists the 94 regiment for prior service. (possibly Home Defence?)

http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gpc010/483728a.gif

This could be his birth reference in the online BMD

there is also an Eliza Ann Haden born in Wolverhampton in 1896 (possibly the sister he refers to?) and an Ernest born there in 1898.

Is this of any help?

Let me know if you think this is your William and I can look around for other resources.
