I'd like to know if anyone has access to "The Times Digital Archive, 1785-1985" ? I have been told that it is available on-line through some libraries that subscribe. I want to find the obituary for Thomas Nicholson WARD of Wandsworth (Avenue Rd.), London who died 12 March 1897, aged 73 yrs. Also his wife, Sophia WARD, also of Wandsworth (Gressenhall Rd.), who died 30 March 1909, aged 81 yrs. Thanks.

checked the London Times archives - under death listings and obituaries for Thomas Ward, 1896- 1898 and found nothing listed. Also, Sophia Ward between 1908 - 1910 yielded no results under either death listings or obituaries. sorry
regards, drakes

I found a reference to Ward, Thomas Nicholson. Wandsworth, gentleman of no occupation - in the bankruptcy listings under the sub-heading 'adjudications'.
The Times, Nov 22, 1890; pg. 14; Issue 33176; col B From the LONDON GAZETTE, Friday, Nov. 21. Crown Office, Nov. 21

Hi Lee, Thanks for sending the info, but can you clarify a few things for me? I'm not familiar with the newspaper archives that you are referring to. It looks like you found references to Thomas N. Ward in both The Times (Nov. 22) and The London Gazette (Nov. 21). Was there any more information shown than what you sent to me? Do you have access to the actual newspaper images, or is it in some kind of transcribed format? I'm asking in order to decide if it's worthwhile for me to try to view these newspaper references for further leads. Thanks, Jim

Hello Jim,
As far as I am aware The London Gazette is a section of The Times which reported on small claims etc in the London courts - therefore the Gazette from the 21st was published in the newspaper the following day...?
There was no other information regarding Thomas Ward, but no doubt you would be able to look up the full details of his case - not sure where bankruptcy hearings records for London would be stored, possibly the PRO or the LMA?
If you let me know your email address I can send you a copy of the relevant page.
Regards, Lee

Noticed that you are researching Ward family from London. My GGG Grandmother - Louisa Ward married William Johnston in 1837 at St James. Paddington, London - from marriage docs her father was listed as Thomas Ward - occ: mason, and the witness to the marriage was a "Rebekkah Ward" = surely either a sister or mother to Lousia. I am pouring though marriage and birth docs for London - looking for info on Thomas Ward - but I cant seem to find one that is listed as a mason - I did find a marriage for Thomas Nicholson Ward to Sophia - where the father is listed as Thomas Ward - - contractor. Wondering if you've come across this Thomas Ward or anything close in your searches.

Hello Kevin, I am researching the Ward family that you found...Thomas Nicholson Ward and his father Thomas Ward (contractor), but I do not have any information on your Ward family. My Thomas Ward was originally from East Dereham, Norfolk where he worked as a plumber. His son Thomas Nicholson Ward was a builder in London. Sorry, but I don't know of any connections to a "Rebekkah Ward" nor a Louisa Ward.
Good luck in your research. Jim
