Are there Head stones around ST John Church?
« on: Wednesday 25 May 05 12:45 BST (UK) »

Hello Friends,

I would like to know if St John's Methodist Church in York Road in Long Melford, Sudbury has it's own graveyard?

I am trying to locate the grave of "MARIA PIPER" to see where she is and to see if she as a headstone? If she did I would like to know what the inscription says.

She died 21 January 1854 in Crip Street, Sudbury.

Her parents were Robert and Ann WIFFEN.

If anyone could help me in anyway it would be fantastic.
I look forward in hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Hi
I can absolutely tell you that St. Johns Methodist Church doesn't have its own graveyard.  I attended this church as a child.  I have never heard of A Crip St. in Sudbury, you don't mean Cross Street do you.  If it is Cross Street Maria might be buried in All Saints Churchyard.  As she died in 1854 this is before the town cemetery was opened, I believe in about 1856.
Other than that there are 2 other churchs in Sudbury, St Peter and St Gregory with churchyards.

Hope this helps.

Sue (an old Sudbury girl)

Hi Sue,

You are a REAL GEM!!!!!  and a bundle of information, a Big Hug to you.  Cheesy Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou.

Sue, how do I go about in finding out if MARIA PIPER is buried at ALL SAINTS?
What should my next step be, as I really want to find her?

MARIA PIPER is my husbands G G Grandmother.

When my mother inlaw passed away about 12 years ago we found a piece of paper with hand written information on it about Stephen Piper, Maria (his wife) and their 5 children.

That is were I got the "CRIP STREET' from.
(At least I now know there is no Crip Street and she wasn't buried at ST John's Church).

I hope to hear from you again Sue, in the mean time, take care

Love Wendy

Hi Wendy
If you can wait until the weekend I can perhaps check the parish records. They hold copies in Sudbury library, but can't get their till Saturday.

This is what I found, but it doesn't correspond with the date that you have.

Maria Piper buried March 23rd or 28th, 1857 (hard to read)
aged 45yrs. in All Saints Churchyard. She came from Cross Street. Sudbury.
Entry in burial register.

Entry No. 1484

This must be the death registration.

Hope you find this helpful.

Hi Sue,

Thankyou for all hard work and for your time in finding out the information on MARIA PIPER'S death and burial.

Sue, do you know what religion ALL SAINTS is?
I just thought I would ask, as I would be very interested to know.

Once again I just want to say a very BIG THANKYOU for every bit of information that you found for me and for going the extra mile by going out of your way to help me.

I hope to hear from you again soon, take care

Wendy
All Saints is one of the parishes of Sudbury, one of three, the other 2 are St. Peter and St. Gregory and they each have their own parish church.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for letting me know about the 3 churches in Sudbury but do you know if ALL SAINTS  is a Church of England parish?

Sue, do you know of anyone in the Sudbury, Newcastle area that goes around the churches taking photos of head stones?

I just thought it would be nice to have a photo of MARIA PIPER'S head stone, (that's if she has one).

I have tried contacting    simon@suffolkchurches.co.uk
a while ago and I haven't heard from him.
On Simon's web site he mention "All Saints" as one of the churches that he has taken photos of, so I sent him an email, but I haven't heard back.

Anyway I Thankyou again for all your help in researching the PIPER family for me, you are a real GEM. Please take care

Love Wendy  Cheesy

Hi Pipera,

This is very exciting !!!!

My husband "David" is the G.G.Grandson of Stephen Piper and Maria Wiffen.

It is through their son "Robert", through his son "John Frederick" and then through his daughter "Nellie" that my husband is related.

Would love to hear from you again soon, please keep in touch. If you would like to send me a PM please do.

In the mean time I will put some info together.

Take Care

Hi Wendy,

You might like to look at this web site - there is a new strand where you can request a grave photo and someone living in (or visiting) the area would take one for you:

www.parishmouse.com

Also, there is a posting on The Common Room called The Gravestone Store that might be able to help.

Kind regards,
Maggie

Hi coppernob,

How are you? Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you.
My husband has a Ezekiel Sore who married a Ellen M Piper in one of the Piper branches in his Family Tree.  Ellen Piper's parents were Henry Piper and Constance Ann Hardy.

Henry Piper's parents were John Piper and Ann Dread and it is through their 3rd son Stephen that my husbands line is through.

I haven't found out as yet who the parents were of Martha Piper who was staying with her grandparents Ellen and Ezekiel sore that was on the 1881 census.

I have also pencil in that Ellen M (Piper) Sore's brother Thomas Henry Piper married a Sarah Sore in 1874 but I am not sure if it is corrert or not.

Ellen M (Piper) Sore sister Susannah Piper married William James Durwin 08 Aug 1883 and her other sister Sarah Ann Piper married Robert Bruning 28 Jan 1865.

Ezekiel Sore occupation on the 1891 census states that he was a Horse Hair Curler and on the 1901 census is states that was a Horse Hair brush curler.

I hope the info was what you were looking for and I hope that I will hear from you again.

Take Care
