a past relative in cradely heath area?
« on: Wednesday 25 May 05 14:53 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find information about a squire in the cradely heath area whose name was (jeavons) fellowes( mid 1800's?).

Family tales have it that his daughter  fell in love with a man called Harris, who wasn't to her fathers liking and was told "dont darken my doorstep again"
That couple were my grandmothers (Amy Rose Harris) parents. I have searched everywhere and can find nothing. Perhaps someone could help further my search??

Do you have the names/details of this daughter, please.

There is a John Jeavons Fellows in Cradley on 1861 but we need other names to track them down..  Also name of her young man to place him in same place

hello, thanks for answering.
I have no other information, though my cousin tells me the father was James, but his memory is not so good.
I found a  marriage record of their daughter Amy Rose to John Frank Charles,  in 1900 in St; Lukes at Cradley Heath, but so far I havn't been able to find a copy of the actual cert. that may give the vital information. Any Ideas ?

The only way to solve this mystery is through Amy Rose Harris - by tracing her ancestry back to her grand parents.

We therefore need to know her birthplace and birth date and parents.
The marriage you referred to is listed on West Midlands BMD and you can order the cert from them. Hopefully this will give both her age and her father and we can get the ball rolling.

The best bet would be to get hold of her birth certificate which would then give her mother's married name and her maiden name which should be Fellowes if your information is correct.

At the moment we just have this:-

Marriage
John F Charles
Amy R Harris
St Luke Cradley Heath

Reference:-
Sandwell 20/3/333

This is the West Midlands reference number to be used if you order the cert from them

Superintendent Registrar
Sandwell Register Office
Highfields
High Street
West Bromwich
West Midlands

B70 8RJ

Payment to Superintendant Registrar  - £7 + a stamped self addressed envelope. Cheque to be crossed    '& Co'

I have looked for Amy Rose Charles on 1901 but haven't been able to spot her.
I will have another play around because she really should be showing up somewhere.  Did she stay in the Cradley area after marriage?

I have found an Amy Harris born 1876 in Cradley. Her father is William and mother Sarah . He is a Horse Nail Maker.

We need to match this up with her father on marriage. If no-one else replies to this request in the meantime send for the cert and then come back.

This is the birth reference. Cradley registers in Stourbridge

HARRIS, Amy  Birth Quarter ending March 1876
Stourbridge
6c
195

Keep a note of it until later when we may be able to match it up. May not be her, of course.

Good Luck, Tricia

Bonjour, bonjour,

I nearly cried when I saw how much trouble you had been to on my behalf.
Iv'e been searching for over a year, to no avail, and then in just one night, everything is before me. I can't thank you enough!!
I am going to sit down with a coffee and digest all this information, as I am quite breathless. It's 25°C over here in France, so I am going to sit in the sun.
I hope to be in touch again soon. What a wonderful site Rootschat is. I shall tell everyone about it.
Once more thanks so much,

 its me again!
hey! I just noticed William J Fellowes !! I have an old postcard, not dated, no stamp and no indication of it's age ( late 1800's early 1900's, perhaps) sent with an address written in pencil, from British Columbia, showing a photo of him and his two little girls in a field. Now.. how to begin to trace him i wonder...?

and the Amy Rose Charles in the 1901 census, is definately my grandma, as she told me she was a telephone operator, and  the telephone exchange was in her front room!! and she would be Charles at that point having married John Frank Charles in 1900. I suppose he isn't mentioned then because he was in the merchant navy and may have been away.

I was also told that the Jeavons Fellowes sold their land off to industry?
regards

Hi again
I forgot to post this link last night.
http://uk-transcriptions.accessgenealogy.com/Worcs..htm
There are several burials for Jeavons Fellows in there, at Cradley Heath and Netherton. Good luck sorting them out Grin

And the 1901 census extracts will interest you. There is a David J Fellows who looks to be Emma's older brother.

Thanks for the latest link, Gardener, it was very interesting. but so many young deaths !!
Yes, I see David, who was Emma's brother.
He shares a grave with William J (the other person I was searching for, who I thought went to Canada) who died aged 32, and an older sister also, Keziah, who died in 1927.
I am now going to try searching for John Jeavons Fellowes and his wife Rosannah.
thanks again,

1872        18 Aug   John Jeavons Fellows         Cradley Heath                       59 Years                 Died 14th Aug

Hi again
I think this may be John even though his age is a bit off: the 61 census has him born 1816 but this is 1813. Not much in it though and it is the right name and place. And it agrees with his age in 1871 Smiley

1871 has them at 61 Dudley wood,Netherton
Rg10-3017/138
John Jevon Fellows,57,carter,Dudley Wood,Worcs
Rosannah 52,Dudley Wood
William,17,carpenter,Dudley Wood

1881
Rg11-2862/87
59 Reddall Hill Rd,Rowley Regis
Rosanna Jeavons,head,W,62,late farmers wife,Worcs,Dudley

Rg12-2282/97
59 Reddall hill Rd,Rowley Regis
Rosehanna Fellows,head,widow,73,-,Dudley,Worcs

Rosannah Jeavons Fellows, death aged 85
Dec qtr,19013,Dudley,6c,10

She doesn't seem to be on the transcript for Cradley heath burials but I would expect her to have been buried there so you may need to check that out better.
