BUMSTEAD family in Blackheath
« on: Wednesday 01 August 07 15:07 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to trace the baptismal records of Eliza Bumstead (born c 1821) & Edward Bumstead (Born c 1830), mother Mary Ann or Margaret (it changes between 1841 & 1851 census).
Both give their place of birth as Blackheath. I assume they could have been baptised in St Michaels, or possibly in Lee/Lewisham. Any suggestions where best to look & if any records have been transcribed?

Hi Steve

In the 1881 census (RG11/328 folio 41 page 26) there is a Newman BUMSTEAD (age 63?) who gives his place of birth as Blackheath.

Looking at the IGI http://www.familysearch.org there is a possible baptism for him at St Alphege, Greenwich - the son of Stephen & Mary Ann BUMSTEAD.  Doing a parent search brings up a number of children for this couple baptised at the same parish inclucing Edward John Bradshaw BUMSTEAD 1830 and Eliza Curtis BUMSTEAD 1820.

This Edward John Bradshaw BUMSTEAD looks to be the Edward J B BUMSTEAD in the 1881 census (born Blackheath) at Greenwich (RG11/723 folio 21 page 36).

Could they be yours Huh

It looks like St Michael & All Angels, Blackheath wasn't built until the later 1820s http://www.nwkfhs.org.uk/blac_plc.htm

Hi Casalguidi

Thanks for the info - it certainly looks like the right family. Now to see how they are related to my family. All I know at present is that one of my ancestors named Bumstead had a child who died in Blackheath in 1847, when the family had previously lived in Whitechapel

I forgot to ask, but how does one do a "parent search" on IGI?

Hi Steve

Go to http://www.familysearch.org, select the "search" page and then IGI.  Once you have the IGI page up, enter parents ie. "Stephen BUMSTEAD" wife "Mary" and select an area ie. British Isles or narrow it down to a county Wink

Also, if you find an event with a batch number of interest ie. C0123456 or whatever, you can search on that batch number only with forename or surname or year etc.  etc.. to bring up events in that parish/on that film.

Have fun

The family seems to be:

Stephen Bumstead m Mary Ann Swain 9 Dec 1811
Children:
Stephen Shrewsbury Bumstead bap 17 Jul 1814
Newman William Bumstead bap 28 Apr 1816
Eliza Curtis Bumstead bap 11 Jun 1820
Stephen Duncan Bumstead bap 17 Sep 1826
Edward John Bradshaw Bumstead bap 29 Aug 1830.
All at St Alphege, Greenwich.

A Stephen Bumstead is recorded as dying in Lewisham in 1839.

Can anyone check the parish register for me to see if there is a burial of the eldest son (Stepehen Shrewsbury) or if the register gives any further ingformation about the father, Stephen, especially profession

Thanks Casalguidi

It adds a bit more to what I knew of this family - especially the death of Stephen Shrewsbury & the witnesses to the marriage ( interesting that one of the surnames was given to the youngest son as a middle name).

I still cannot find a link between this family & mine although I'm convinced one exists
