Browns/Waughs of Renton and Dumbarton, 1916
« on: Friday 27 May 05 17:20 BST (UK) »

We will be touring Dunbartonshire (from Western Canada) in September.
My great great grandmother Mary (Brown) Waugh, after the death of her husband William in 1911, stayed with Belle Brown (perhaps her sister or cousin?).  Her death cert -

District #496; District Name-Dumbarton; Entry 15
Name:  Mary Waugh, widow of William Waugh, factory worker
Date of Death: 18 Jan 1916:        Age: 76
Place of Death:  24 William Street, Dumbarton (usual residence)
Father:  Charles Brown (deceased) general labourer
Mother: Isabella Sweeney, previously Brown (deceased):  Maiden name:  Gallacher
Name of Informant:  James Brown of 7 Thimble Street, Renton (nephew)

From the Lennox Herald Obit.:
29th January 1916 - At 24 William Street, Dumbarton, on the 18th January, Mary Brown, aged 76 years, widow of William Waugh, an old residenter of the Vale of Leven.

We would very much to visit local R.C. cemeteries where Mary and her husband William may have been interred (William died in Jamestown in 1911).

As well, any help of connecting the Browns up would be wonderful.

Hi there
I live in Dumbarton and the RC Parishes are St Patricks , St Michaels . The local graveyard is located at the bottom of an Estate called Bellsmyre .
The nearest RC Parish to Jamestown is St Kessogs in Balloch or St Marys in Alexandria . The local graveyard there is up on a hill , 10 minute walk away from Alexandria town centre . If you need any more help just holler . I also have family from Renton , their parish is St Martins .

Thank you, Mrst.  William and Mary Brown were married at the Alexandria Church in 1860, and lived at Milton Terrace in Jamestown from at least the 1871 census through to William's death in 1911.  Although not a certainty, I feel it likely that they were buried in Alexandria.
Are there any signs to indicate the St. Marys cemetery (from the Alexandria town centre)?
Thanks again for the response.

Hi Brian

If William and Mary lived and died in Jamestown then they are certainley buried in Alexandria cemetry . No Catholic churches in this area have burial sites on their own ground .
It is a good idea to get a taxi up there as i dont think it is sign posted very well . Also it is on a very steep hill . Having said that if you are in Alexandria town centre any local could point you in the right direction . There is really nothing left of the old vale and the town centre is quite poor . Jamestown is really in Balloch , the gateway to Loch Lomond . It is a beautiful part of the country and has a country park with a castle and lovely veiws across the loch . There are also boat trips which are great if the weather is dry . Try to get to Loch Lomond Shores too which is at the top of Balloch . It has shops , bars and tourist info . I was born and bred in Balloch so if you need anything else please let me know .

Thank you for this.  My grandmother often talked of (when she was a child) growing up there, she would walk to the castle or "catch a tram" to Dumbarton.  She also talked of the beauty of the loch.

This may be coinsidence but there is a W Brown living in Jamestown now and 4 Waughs in Dumbarton . Might be worth checking that one out . I looked in the local British telephone directory just out of curiosity  Smiley
There is a large tourist information building in the middle of Balloch at the train station where you could probably look them up .
Good luck  Cheesy
