the perpetual curate of ash salop
« on: Sunday 29 May 05 15:15 BST (UK) »

going through my grandfathers family history collection, (he once did a complete family tree, which was lost, except his collections of notes on the subject.) i found this letter. i cant seem to tie it in with my family, but i thought it was quite interesting. so I've posted this for three reasons, in hope of information about it, incase someone else relates to it, and just incase anyone carse to read it.

the perpetual curate of ash salop
sir
in your paper of the 14th "instants" a defsenter
from principle" seeks for information respecting the rev. Mr
Gibson of ash, salop. who is patronised there because he
can abuse defsenters, i think i may supply the information
he seeks.
some few years since, there was a person named Timothy
Gibson, who was the pastor of the united congregational
churches at chelwood and clutton, two villages in this county
he was ordained at chelwood in about the year 1825 i
think this must be the present "perpetual curate of ash;"
if so he was then as stanch a defsenter as he is now a divoted
Episcopalian, i was present at his ordination and his allusions
to a state church were considered out of place, and very strong.
Originally, I believe, this Mr Gibson had been a methodist in
the new connexion, which he left for congregational difsent,
and went to Hackney, where under the presidency of Mr
Collinson he studied for the ministry among the indepentents.
he did not continue many years at Chelwood, his intellectual
attainments were very scanty, and as he had no taste for study,
the character of his ministry became very unpopular; added
to which, he was prone to Plagiarism. from Chelwood

he went to Newton Abbot, in devonshire, as colleague with the
Rev Rob Crook the independent minister of that place when Mr
G, enimity to the state church soon broke out, and kept him
and his neighbours in a state of constant irritation. one fact
may be stated; while Mr Gibson was at newton, the incumbent
of the parish died, when Mr Gibson gave notice from the
pulpit that he should preach a sermon on the occasion on
the following sunday, from the text [Ceel:&x10,] "and so i saw
the wicked [buried] who had come and gone from the place of
the holy," [xc] in the meantime Mr Crook who was a wise
and beter man, saw the notes of the intended sermon
and told Mr Gibson that if he [furnished] it he (Mr Crook)
could not attend, some of Mr Crooks friends also waited on
Gibson, and expressed then fears that the chapel would be
pulled down if he were present. at length it was
ditermined that Mr Crook should [Previously] look through
the sermon, and so far as he could, [stap] it of its offensive
character, which he did. in this modified form it was preached
and, even then, Gibson, on his return from the chapel, had
his gown torn from his back, and was obliged to be guarded
home, this same gibson soon after sought admission into
the national church, and was ordained: since which i have
been informed that he has written to the son of the clergyman
whos fathers memory he intended to vilify, proposing that he

should come down to newton Abbot and preach against the
difsenters, but the offer was declined. the last time i heard
of Gibson he was curate of melksham in wilts: but there
he did not long remain
i must leave your "constant reader" do decide if this same
Gibson be now the "perpetual curate of ash" salop
if so, i wish the people there, joy of their prize
         [jam] in yours sincerely
Glastonbury Jan 20th 1841         Robert James

the above is taken from the patient paper feb 1st 1841

this is exactly how it appears, theres a word, "difsenter" which i do not know how to spell or what it means, and this is my best transcription.

can anyone tell me anything about this letter?

Hi Harry,
I imagine the word is dissenter, the apparent f being the long s sometimes used at this time. Makes interesting reading. Is the writer or the curate related to you?
Regards Jan Wink
Ignore the question just seen that you can't tie it in with your family Embarrassed
