Just "googling", one of my more desperate past times, when I came upon a gem of a post. Unfortunatley this lady Dorothy Maddock had posted her enquiry to Rootsweb in 2001 - I knew she wouldn't have the same e-mail address now, but nevertheless I tried to contact her using it - no luck!
So there she is out in New Zealand and I have come upon her 4 years too late. She has watchmaking Maddocks in Over and snap so do I, she has Walter Maddock born 1840 and I have a mystery child called Walter Maddock 1 year old on the 1841 census with my Maddocks. We surely are a match made in Heaven.
How do I contact her - she is from Auckland, as she puts an Auckland weather report at the bottom of her posts
Ideas please

If so maybe you could add your posting to the topic (mentioning the dead e-mail address), and somebody else will reply and maybe, in a roundabout sort of way, you will still get to where you want to be ....

Hi Siouxzie,
Have done a bit of googling to see if I can help with your Dorothy Maddock.
Two things:
She seems to be have been quite active with gen-type queries and I notice (if this is the same woman) that she has used two email addresses. One is dmaddock@clear.net.nz and the other (possibly older one) is dmaddock@paradise.net.nz. Both are mainstream NZ providers - maybe you could try the other one (whichever).
The other thing is that a Dorothy Maddock seems to be very active on the Avondale Community Board (in Auck.) and I picked up her address along the way. Could well be the same person. I'm sure I can find her phone no. It's nearly 11.pm here - a bit late to phone strangers - but I'd be happy to give her a call if you have no luck with the email address.

Hello Siouxzie,
I saw your message, and I went to Google and typed in 'Dorothy Maddock New Zealand', this is what I came up with.
There is a Dorothy Maddock, who is a member of 'The Royal Scottish Dance Society New Zealand' - New Zealand Branch Directory 2005 (Management Committee), Canterbury Region - Oxford (President).
If you go to the address list below, hit Control F (on keyboard), type in Dorothy Maddock (and you will go direct to the Phone No. / address and name).

Ros, I tried the alternative email you gave me and so far so good. The first one clear.net.nz came back almost immediately. But as yet paradise.net has stayed out there in the ether.
So fingers crossed. Thanks for the offer of giving her a call for me, I'll keep you posted how I go on with this email and if no joy I might take you up on that. Who knows we might get another Rootschatter out of this.

Hi Siouxzie,
Looking at Piedstilt's post which mentioned the Avondale Community Board I went looking for likely prospects on the NZ White Pages on-line, and found only 2 "D MADDOCKses" in the whole of Auckland, vis;
Maddock D W & C L
95 Hillcrest Ave Northcote Auckland 0-9-442 2132
Maddock T D
1A/250 Richmond Rd Grey Lynn Auckland 0-9-376 0661
The first is on the North Shore so probably too far away, but the second is a few suburbs away from Avondale. A letter to both might result in a bite. I note that the Avondale Community Board strikes on the name were about two years old, and I wonder if the lady has since died and the emails addresses are defunct. Hopefully the contacts above might be relatives who could help you.
The 'Royal Scottish Dance Society New Zealand' reference doesn't look likely to me.
If you have no luck with these contacts the NZ Society of Genealogists might be an option. If D MADDOCK was a member she might have submitted her genealogical information to them.

I received an email this morning - apparently one of you NZ rootschatters rang her!!! Like bloodhounds you are. Anyhow, I am convinced now that her Walter and mine are the same, so armed with more info....I shall endeavour to track him down.
