Hello,
If possible, a census lookup for:
William Cann, b. 1842 Cambridge (occupation: Hawker in 1881)
He's not home with his family, and I think he wasn't married by this time.
Family were in Cambridge - St. Andrew the Less.

Hi,
Are you sure you've got the right dates and the right family? The entry I think you found for the family in 1861 in St Andrews the Less has:
Elizabeth Cann, Widow, 40
Caroline Cann, Daughter, 11
William Cann, Son, 8
The William Cann I think you found in 1881 was 39 years old so he would have been 19 in 1861 - possibly the right age to be Elizabeth's son but not if she also had a son called William who was about 10 years younger!

The 1861 family I've got is:
William, 1817
Mary, 1821
Thomas, 1850
Charles, 1853
Sarah, 1858
James, 1860
They had William (8 yrs.) with them in 1851, and I haven't got him again until 1881.
I don't think I have an Elizabeth with children anywhere...
