I have managed - at last- to get into my webspace...I think! but now I want to upload animage or a file but can't seem to be able to do it the message is bad extension

To transfer any files from one computer to another in this manner you need a program called an FTP program (File Transfer Protocol).

Regarding images there are several supported image formats for web pages but only two types of images used by the majority these are

.jpg (otherwise known as jpeg's) or .gif files

i have downloaded a programme called 'coffeeftp62.exe' how am I supposed to use it?

Install the program
When setting up or on first use it should ask you for details such as  username and password for the web space you have.

This particular program you have is one of the easiest to use when you run the program the window to the left is the drive on your machine the one on the right is on the web server.
You can then just Drag and drop the files from one window to the other and the machine will enable the transfer process

The full process is available under the help item in the menu bar once you install the program.
