Family History of Methvin
« on: Wednesday 01 June 05 03:18 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to do some research on my Scottish family history and what our coat of arms and what our holdings might have been, if any.  I know my great grandfather's name was Cottie Methvin and he moved to the United States in either the late 1800's or early 1900's.  He had 4 sons, whose names were Rayford, Avis, Athal and Thomas, and a daughter named Virginia.  My grandfather's name was Thomas Edward Methvin.  If anyone has any further information that might help me, I'd appreciate any you may provide.  I'd really like to know what my family coat of arms was and if we were part of a clan...what that clan name may have been and who our Tartan is, if there is one.

Sincerely,
David Smith of family Methvin

David,

Was your grandfather know as Edward, was the oldest of the four boys, played a banjo in hear younger days and died in Texas maybe 10 years ago?  I believe he died after some flooding.

Well, it seems I had some "facts" wrong.  My great-grandfather didn't come directly over from Scotland.  His father Nathan Methvin was one of eight brothers who came to the United States together and then dispersed across the North East, South East and Texas.  My great-grandfather's name was Gene Methvin and my grand father's name was Thomas Edward Methvin.  I haven't had much time in the past couple of weeks to do any research.  I was on vacation the week before last and was on call this past week.  I will continue my research very soon.  Thanks for your efforts.

I am not that clear on facts either.  I only remember meeting Thomas Edward Methvin once at my grandfathers funeral.  My grandfather was Edgar Eugene (Gene) Methvin.  My father is Rayford and we lived outside the country while I was growing up.

There is a website by David Methvin Pierce which has some photographs from Cullman, Alabama which incudes a young picture of Gene Methvin.

Good luck with your search.

You want to know something that's going to blow your mind?  Rayford Methvin is the brother of my grandfather.  I spoke to your dad a couple of weeks ago.  As soon as I can arrange to get a fax machine he's going to send me the information he has on the Methvin family history.  I think your mom was the one who did the research according to what I've been told.  I have also been in Contact with Rayford's sister Virginia and her daughter Terri.  I haven't talked to Avis or Athal in quite a few years, but I think I'm going to try to call and talk to them this week end.

The last time I saw your father I must have only been somewhere between 10 and 12 years old.  Great-grandfather Gene was already dead and Virgie was living just down the street from where I grew up.  My grandfather (I always knew him as Tom) lived just around the corner from Virgie.  Your father was here visiting our great-grandmother Virgie.

Tommy, Wayne, Gerry used to come over and play at my house all the time.  Wayne and Gerry weren't as adventurous as Tommy and me, though, so we almost always left them behind.  They were afraid to climb trees and Tommy and I were dare-devils and would climb as high as we could go until the limbs started cracking under our weight.

I just spoke to Tommy last Thursday and from what I understand, he's the only one that made anything out of himself.  I was told that Wayne is a crackhead and Gerry is homosexual.  It aggravates me, though, when Tommy calls his number is restricted.  I can't call him back and he hasn't called me since.  I wasn't able to talk to him as long as I wanted, because I was on call and working.

Anyway...hello cousin!

Now, is this a small world we live in or what?

It is a small world.  I never really got a chance meet any of my cousins on the Methvin side.  It is good to speak with you.

I have one brother, Paul, who is in Durham.  He works at Duke Hospital in something related to insurance.  I am in Raleigh and in the IT industry.  I run a division of Brunswick Corporation which is a two tier distributor for embedded IBM database products.  I work with value added distributors throughout North America.  My wife had and sort of still has an insurance agency in Myrtle Beach.  She took seven years off to be with our son and is getting back into the work force.  I have one 15 year old son who is into school and sports.

Mom and Dad are retired and live just outside Raleigh.....  They are doing great for their age.

Again, it is good to hear from you.

Ray,

I hope this finds you and yours well.  I was wondering if you could try to get the information your father has converted over to either text files and send them to me via email, or make some copies and send them to me.  You can contact me at dsmith540@hotmail.com and I will provide you with my street address and phone number.  I'd really like to have the information your father has, so I can have a more complete web site.  You can view what I have accomplished so far at http://www.freespaces.com/graewolphe/nathan-methvin.html.  I am going to attempt to research and follow each and every branch of the line from Nathan Methvin on down.  I'm having some trouble finding any information on his brothers or his father, so any information you may provide will be a great help to me.

Something else I'm having a problem with is where your father, my grandfather, Avis, Athal, and Virginia were born, the year they were born, etc.  I'm hoping you can help me fill in our family tree on my web site.  Let me know what you think so far and I will be awaiting your response so I can continue to expand on my web site.

Thanks,

Dave
