Bolton, St Peter Parish Records
« on: Wednesday 01 June 05 19:31 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Does anyone know how I can order copies of the original parish register entries for St Peters Church, Bolton?

Which record office would hold these records & do they have a mail order service?

I am looking for marriage entry 11/9/1809 John Hilton & Alice Anderson.
Also Baptism entries for their possible children.
William Hilton 10/6/1810
John Hilton 28/7/1811

Any advice as to how I can obtain these copies would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jac

There's probably a copy in the archives at Bolton Library. They are quite a helpful lot there, and they have film readers with printers attached.

Otherwise, Lancashire Record Office is the place.

Thanks, Andrew,

I would be ever so grateful if you could try to obtain copies for me.
I live in the Isle of Man so it is very difficult to look up records and I have to rely on IGI.  It is even more difficult to obtain copies once I think that I have found the right record.
I will of course reimburse you for any expenses.  If you have any success please send me a PM so that we can exchange addresses.

Good luck,
Jac

Manchester Archives and local Studies, Central Library, Manchester, has microfims for the St Peter's Bolton parish records, if that makes it easier for anybody

I phoned the Archive service in Bolton today to ask that very same question.

Apparently some records are in Manchester while others are in Preston.  They have copies in Bolton but the quality is often poor because of lack of contrast between shades of black, grey and white.  It also seems to depend what date you're looking for and the type of information.  They were phenomonally helpful on the phone so I recommend you phone them with the specific info and dates you need and they'll point you in the right direction.  The man I spoke to did say that records of that date would be in Latin.  They do a free 15 min search for you in their own records, which is worth knowing.
01204 332185 is their phone number and archives@bolton.gov .uk their email addy.

Hello there

I just want to say that I had a marriage to look up from St Peters Church in Bolton - it was for the year 1834 and I e-mailed Manchester Archives and Local Studies who did a short look up for me and found the record there.

I hope these details are still correct - you could always try e-mailing them...

Manchester Archives and Local Studies

Hi,

I have just noticed your replies to my thread originally posted in 2005!!  Thanks for the suggestions I will get on the case on Monday. I never did get my copies.

Cheers,
