I'm descended from a George Stanhope who was supposed to have been born in England and moved to Ireland with his family as a young boy. Not sure whether this was my gg-gf or my ggg-gf, but it would have happened in the early years of the 1800's. Does anyone know why people were moving to Ireland in the early 1800's? There's a possibility that there's a military connection, but that hasn't been proved. Was there much being done in Ireland in terms of construction at this time?
There were two military barracks (at Belturbet and Cavan) and twenty three RIC stations in the county in 1837 when S. J. Lewis wrote his "Topographical Dictionary of Ireland."www.from-ireland.net/cav/lewis/cavcounty.htm
